Brisbane, CA – The Academy of Art University's softball team faced off against Dominican University for the second day of the conference series on Sunday afternoon. Even after a late double header the night before, the Urban Knights came out ready to play. AAU's offense came alive in game one, as they defeated the Penguins 9-0. In game two, the Knights had to rally late for a come from behind victory to secure their complete series sweep of Dominican. They won with a score of 2-1.
Just as they did in the games yesterday, the Urban Knights jumped on the board first in game one. This time they scored two runs in the top of the first to take the early lead over the Penguins. They added to their lead by scoring three more runs in the top of the third. The Knights didn't stop there, as they continued to put runners on base and string their hits together. They secured their win by scoring once in the fifth, and then pushed three more runs across in the top of the seventh to take a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.
AAU's pitching was outstanding as it was able to keep the Dominican batters off balance. The Knights' pitching shut out their opponents, and combined with solid defense, allowed the women to have control of the entire game. Even though they played a complete seven inning game, the Knights defeated their conference rivals with a final score of 9-0.
Freshman Kimberly Dauer was on the mound for the Knights and pitched a great game just as she had the day before. Dauer received the win in the game, and gave up just four hits. She allowed no walks, and tied a game high nine strikeouts.
Freshman Andrea Hanchey led the offense for AAU. She went 3-4 with two runs, a stolen base, and one run batted in. Sophomore Melissa Coe also did well going 2-4 with two runs, two RBI's, and two stolen bases, and junior Alana Aweau also went 2-4 with a double, and two runs batted in. Sophomore Sierrah Garcia also stood out in the game going 1-4 with two runs, and two RBIs, junior Ashley Lokey went 1-2 with a double, a stolen base, and three runs, and senior Shampayne Clay rounded things out going 1-3 with two runs batted in.
Only three Penguin batters recorded hits in the game. Those players were Molly Howard who went 2-3, and Cortnie Chenoweth and Shawna Robb who both went 1-3. Alisha McKnight pitched for the Penguins and recorded the loss. She went seven innings pitched giving up 11 hits, six earned runs, two walks, and had three strikeouts.
The Urban Knights scored nine runs on 11 hits, left five runners on base, and committed no errors.
Game two was a much different story for the Urban Knights. Their offense was quiet and they were not able to string any hits together to score any runs. Their solid defense and tough pitching kept them in the game and kept their opponents from scoring any runs of their own. Game two proved to be a pitchers' duel for most of the game. The Urban Knights' two pitchers worked together to keep their opponents off balance.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Penguins broke the shut out by scoring one run. But the Urban Knights were quick to answer back. They scored two runs of their own in the top of the sixth to take a one run lead. Hanchey hit an infield single to score freshman Julie Martin from third for the first run, and was later followed by a single to left field by Garcia that scored Coe from third for the second run. The Knights then had to rely on both their defense and pitching to hold on to the win. Both came through for AAU, and after the late game come from behind rally, the women took the fourth and final game of the series from Dominican with a score of 2-1.
Garcia and Hanchey led the Urban Knights offensively in the game. They both went 1-3 with one run batted in. Lokey and Aweau also did well as they both went 1-3 in the game.
Dauer and Garcia had a duel pitching effort in the second game. Dauer started the game and went a total of 4.2 innings giving up just one hit, and posted five strikeouts. Garcia went a total of 2.1 innings pitched giving up two hits, one earned run, and had four strikeouts. Dauer received the win for the game.
Lead hitters for the Penguins were Shawna Robb who went 1-3 with one run, Alisha McKnight who went 1-2 with a double and one run batted in, and Jill Rizo who went 1-3 in the game. Robb also received the loss as she was in the circle for her team. She went seven innings pitched giving up four hits, two runs, two walks, and had one strikeout.
The Urban Knights scored two runs on four hits, left five runners on base, and again committed no errors.
After the complete series sweep, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 26-20-1 overall, and 15-11 in conference, while Dominican University's record falls to 2-24 overall and 2-20 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights play again on Wednesday, April 21st when they play Notre Dame de Namur University for a make-up game.
