Brisbane, CA-
In their first annual “Swing for a Cause” tournament, the Academy of Art University hosted two teams, Patten and Oregon Tech, on Saturday afternoon. The Knights faced Patten University in the first game of the tournament, followed by Oregon Tech in a later game. In game one, the Urban Knights took a commanding lead over the Lions and won with a score of 9-0 in five innings. In the second game, AAU came from behind to earn a victory over the OIT Owls with a score of 6-5.

The Urban Knights wore limited edition purple jerseys in both games, to show their support in the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma. The ladies held a silent auction during the games, selling the jersey's they were wearing to help raise money for AADP and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation. AADP  was also present at the games, to register people to be bone marrow donors.

AAU took an early lead in game one against the Patten Lions. In the bottom of the first inning, junior Alana Aweau hit a towering three home run to put her team up by a 3-0 lead. The Knights' offense continued to roll as they posted one more run in the second, one in the third, and four runs in the bottom of the fourth, this time off a series of strung together hits. The nine run lead would be more than enough to secure their win, as AAU received a stellar pitching performance from their sophomore ace Sierrah Garcia. The Knights would end up winning after the game was called in the fifth due to the eight run rule.

Garcia threw a no-hitter, going five innings pitched, with two walks and seven strikeouts. After receiiving the win, her record is now at 4-3.

AAU was lead by freshman Andrea Hanchey who went 3-3 with three runs scored and one run batted in. Junior Alana Aweau also had a great game going 2-3 with a home run, one run scored, and four runs batted in, and freshman Nicole Smith went 2-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in.

The Urban Knights shut out all of the Patten batters, as only Jarica Blakeley and Mallorie Wilson reached base on walks; and Penelope Crouse-Feehan reached on an error. They were the only players to reach base for the Lions. Senior Nicole Scott received the loss, going four innings pitched giving up 10 hits, eight earned runs, two walks, and had three strikeouts.

The Academy of Art University scored nine runs on 10 hits, and committed one error in the game.

The Knights came out flat in the second game and their opponents, Oregon Tech, took advantage of it.  After a scoreless first inning, the Owls struck first by putting up one run in the top of the second. It wasn't long before the Urban Knights fought back as they scored three runs in the bottom of the third when senior Shampayne Clay hit a three run home run well over the center field fence.

The Owls immediately answered back as they put up three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. The one run lead kept the Owls on top for another inning, but the Knights were able to muster up one more run in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game at four. OIT came back and scored one more run in the top of the seventh inning to again take the lead.

With two outs and a runner on first and second, junior Alana Aweau singled up the middle to score freshman Nicole Smith who was at second. Sophomore Melissa Coe then singled to right field for the game winning RBI, as freshman Andrea Hanchey scored from third on the hit. True to form for the entire game, the Urban Knights came from behind to take the win for themselves.

Again freshman Andrea Hanchey led her AAU team in the second game. Hanchey went 2-3 with two runs scored, including the game winning run. Senior Shampayne Clay went 2-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in, and junior Ashley Lokey also went 2-4 in the game.

Freshman Kimberly Dauer started on the mound the Urban Knights. Dauer went 6.1 innings pitched giving up five runs (four which were earned), and posted nine strikeouts. Sierrah Garcia came in for relief and received the win in the second game as well; going .2 innings pitched and recording one strikeout. Dauer received the no-decision.

Leading the Owls was Sara Coates who went 3-4 with a home run, two runs, and one RBI, and Ashley Larson who went 2-4 with a home run, one run scored, and two runs batted in. Mikey Eustance came in to pitch in the seventh inning, and recorded the loss. Taylor Schmidt started on the mound for OIT and went six innings pitched with four earned runs, one walk, and two strike outs.

The Urban Knights scored six runs on nine hits, and had three errors in the game.

After the two wins, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 8-6-1 overall, while Patten's record is at 3-8, and Oregon Tech's record is now 10-10. The Urban Knights play tomorrow, as they again host Oregon Tech and Patten University at home. The Knights play OIT at 10:00 AM and Patten at 2:00 PM. The games will be held at Mission Blue field in Brisbane, CA.
