Tennis Defeated by No. 3 BYU Hawaii

Academy of Art University started their road trip in Hawaii with a tough competition against BYU Hawaii on Tuesday afternoon. BYU- Hawaii, who is ranked 3rd in the NCAA Division II National Poll, came out in full force and were able to overpower the Urban Knights. The top seated PacWest powerhouse came out on top of the Knights with an overall score of 9-0.

"We were up against an incredibly experienced team on their home turf," Head Coach Dave Allen said. "Butting heads with one of the top teams in the nation, I'm happy with the way everyone handled their singles matches and the way we competed is very encouraging for the future."

The Urban Knights played well and stepped up to the challenge the Seasiders' brought. Number two ranked Elwen Li (BYUH) defeated the Urban Knights' Diane Phan with scores of 6-0, 6-0. Number three in the country Yuan Jia (BYUH) won over Laone "Lala" Botshoma (AAU) with scores of 6-1, 6-1. All of the Urban Knights were defeated by their Seasiders opponents.

"Despite playing a team that is very good, I was proud of how everyone played," Coach Allen said. "Everyone still picked up their game to that competitive level we are used to seeing."

Cecilia Hedin was the closest to defeating her BYU Hawaii opponent Justine Gallacci, but came up short and ended up losing 6-2, 6-3. After dropping all six singles matches, the Knights came out attacking in doubles. Despite their best efforts, AAU could not overcome the Seasiders, and would end up dropping all three doubles matches.

"We are looking forward to some important matches coming up this week," Coach Allen said. "We haven't played many matches against these Hawaii teams and I think the team is definitely looking forward to the match-ups."

After the loss, the Academy of Art University's record falls to 5-9 overall, while BYU- Hawaii's record improves to 15-0. The Urban Knights will use what they learned from this match, and carry it into the Aqua Tournament which they start tomorrow. The Knights begin the Aqua Tournament by facing Hawaii- Hilo tomorrow, March 24th. Game time is set for 3:00 PM (HST) and all tournament games will be held at Central Oahu Regional Park.
