Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader With Humboldt

Brisbane, CA- Fresh off their return from Hawaii, the Academy of Art University softball team hosted Humboldt State in a mind-day double header on Sunday. Both games were evenly matched as the two teams battled it out offensively throughout the day. In game one, Humboldt had a come from behind win over the Urban Knights with a final score of 7-4. In game two, the Knights were the ones to rally from behind and took the game from the Lumberjacks with a score of 6-2.

Academy of Art struck first in game one as they posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shampayne Clay hit a towering two-run home run to put her team ahead. Pitching was effective for the Urban Knights as usual for the majority of the game. However, in the top of the fourth inning the Jacks' bats came alive. They managed to score five runs in the inning to take the lead over the Knights.

The Urban Knights answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Sierrah Garcia doubled, and Alana Aweau hit a two-run home run to bring the Knights to within one. But the Jacks added to their lead by scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Although AAU had chances to score while they stranded runners in scoring position, they were not able to bring in any more runs, and they ended up dropping the game to the Lumberjacks.

Shampayne Clay led the Urban Knights in the game by going 2-3 with a homerun, one run, and two runs batted in. Alana Aweau also had a solid game at the plate by going 1-2 with a home run, one run, and two runs batted in. Ashley Lokey stood out by going 2-4 with a double, and Melissa Coe did well going 2-3.

Starting in the circle for AAU was Kimberly Dauer. She would receive the loss going four innings pitched, giving up five earned runs, one walk, and posting one strikeout. Sierrah Garcia came in to finish the game and threw three innings giving up two earned runs, one walk, and recorded three strikeouts.

For the Lumberjacks, Geneva Perrine went 3-4 with a double, one run, and one run batted in, and Courtney Hiatt went 2-4 with two runs, and two RBI's. Lindsay Warren also did well going 1-3 with one run scored, and one run batted in.

Getting the win for the game was Humboldt's ace Gracie Perez. Perez went seven innings pitched giving up four earned runs, one walk, and had eight strikeouts in the game.

The Urban Knights scored four runs, on nine hits, and had two errors in the game.

 

 

AAU gave up an early lead in game two as they committed two errors to start the game which resulted in a run. After being down by one run in the top of the first, the Knights turned right around and scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning as Sierrah Garcia singled up the middle to bring in Nicole Smith from third. The next two innings were scoreless for both teams, as pitching came into play. But the Lumberjacks scored a run in the top of the fourth to break the 1-1 tie.

The Urban Knights finally got things going for themselves in the bottom of the fourth as they posted two runs. Melissa Coe hit a one out single to start things off. Ashley Lokey followed with a single of her own. Andrea Hanchey then challenged Humboldt's defense and won, as she reached on an error, which ended up scoring both Coe and Lokey.

The Knights added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, when they scored three runs in the inning. Alana Aweau led things off with a walk, followed by a single by Lorraine Etchell. Melissa Coe then grounded out, advancing the runners one base. Humboldt then intentionally walked Ashley Lokey to load the bases, brining up Nicole Smith with two outs. Smith came up big for her team by hitting a double to the center field fence, which cleared the bases. Powerful pitching then kept the Lumberjacks from being able to score any more runs, and the Knights were able to hold onto their lead to win the game.

On the mound for the Urban Knights was Sierrah Garcia who went all seven innings pitched. She gave up two runs (zero earned), one walk, and posted four strikeouts in the game. She also recorded the win in the game.

AAU had several players put up big numbers in the game. Lorraine Etchell was one of them. Etchell went 2-3 with one run scored. Nicole Smith impressed going 1-2 with a double, one run scored, and three runs batted in, and Ashley Lokey also went 1-2 with two runs scored. Melissa Coe rounded out her great day going 1-3 with one run, and Sierrah Garcia finished the game going 1-3 with one run batted in.

Leading the Lumberjacks was Giavanna Hampton who went 2-2 with one run batted in, Nikki Ketteringham who went 1-4 with one run scored, and Lindsay Warren who went 1-3.

Vaneza Hoover received the loss in the game after going six innings pitched giving up six runs (three earned), five walks, and had five strikeouts.

The Urban Knights scored six runs on eight hits, had two errors, and left nine runners on base.

After the Split, the Academy of Art University's record is at 13-13-1 overall, and 3-5 in conference, and Humboldt State's record is at 14-14 overall. The Urban Knights take action next on Thursday, March 25th when they host BYU Hawaii. Game times are set for 12:00 and 2:00 PM at Mission Blue Field in Brisbane, CA.
