Phoenix, AZ – The Academy of Art University (0-23, 0-13, PacWest) was defeated by
Grand Canyon University (13-16, 7-6 PacWest) on the road Thursday, 73-49. Junior guard
Lance Olivier scored 10 points and pulled down three rebounds for the Urban Knights.
AAU fell behind early to the Antelopes due to their struggling offense. The Urban Knights connected on only 5-of-24 shots from the floor and 1-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Grand Canyon shot 13-of-30.
The second half was a different story as the Urban Knights found their rhythm. They knocked down 43 percent of their shots including 2-of-5 from behind the arc. AAU put together a 12-1 run halfway through the second half to close the gap, but the deficit was too much for them to overcome.
In addition to Olivier, the Urban Knights' leading scorer Phillip Samuel notched 10 points. The junior guard was 2-of-6 from the floor including 1-of-2 from deep. Senior Weleh Dennis also recorded 10 points and dished out an assist in his 25 minutes on the floor.
For the Antelopes T.J. Benson led the team with 15 points hitting 6-of-13 shots including 3-of-10 from three points. Nick Witherill added 11 points for Grand Canyon in 32 minutes in the game.
The Urban Knights will play their last road game of the season on Saturday the 27th. They will take on Dixie State College of Utah in St. George, Utah. The tip is set for 3 p.m. in Burns Arena.
