San Rafael, CA – The Urban Knights (0-21, 0-11 PacWest) were unable to defeat Dominican University (8-14, 5-6 PacWest) Thursday as they fell 81-58. Despite 14 points by junior
Jonathan Burnett, the Academy of Art fell behind early to the Penguins and could not recover. Burnett was a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds in the contest.
AAU had the lead more than five minutes into the first half, but it slowly slipped away. The Penguins, who shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half, followed with a 13-4 run that they would turn into a 50-24 point lead at the half.
In the second half, the Urban Knights outscored the Penguins 34-31 and received 23 points from their bench compared to the Knights' 10. AAU stepped up their defense holding Dominican's shooting percentage to 38, but they did not have an answer for Austin Bryan who had 11 second half points, and they eventually fell to the Penguins.
For AAU, senior guard Weleh Dennis came off the bench and added 10 points in his 25 minutes. Dennis looked sharp for the second game in a row; after recording 17 points against NDNU Saturday.
Another good showing came from sophomore Hunter Hayden who pulled down a game high 10 rebounds and notched seven points. Urban Knights leading scorer Phillip Samuel also tallied seven points while he grabbed four rebounds.
Bryan finished the game with 22 points for the Penguins, and Xander McNally added 15 points and eight rebounds.
On Monday, February 22nd, the Knights will head to Belmont, CA to take on NDNU. The game is set for 7:30 at the Walter Gleason Gymnasium.
