SCOUTING THE PENGUINS:
Dominican University has played in some thrillers since they defeated Academy of Art 82-62 back on Jan. 23 at Kezar Pavilion. On the Penguins' recent Hawaii roadtrip, they got past Chaminade 84-76 in overtime by way of guard Austin Bryan's season-high 34 points. Two days later on Feb. 10, DUC dropped an 89-84 overtime decision to Hawaii Pacific. Bryan's scoring has led the Penguins in 15 of the team's 21 games this season and he averages 19.8 points per game. Forward Alex Ward puts up 10.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest.
SCOUTING THE ARGONAUTS:
With the aforementioned 59-57 victory over AAU on Feb. 13, Notre Dame de Namur University got its first PacWest Conference win this season. Forward Nick Storment had a team-high 16 points (8-for-12 FT) in that game along with nine rebounds. NDNU's leading scorer guard Bennie Murray nearly had a double-double against the Knights with nine points and 10 rebounds. He currently averages 13.1 points per contest with team-bests in 3-pointers made (33) and steals (31). The Argonauts will face Dominican on Feb. 20 before their rematch with Academy of Art on Feb. 22.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYS HEARTS OUT BUT NDNU WINS 59-57:
In the Urban Knights' historic first Homecoming on Feb. 13, Academy of Art University battled Notre Dame de Namur into the final seconds. Although the result was a 59-57 victory for NDNU, the game was packed with excitement. The atmosphere inside Kezar Pavilion was electric and the spirited crowded erupted watching senior guard
Weleh Dennis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give AAU a lead in the first half.
Dennis provided an encore in the second period when two more treys went down and the score was tied 48-48. Down two points in the final seconds, freshman guard
Jordan Knox put up a potential game-tying shot, but it fell short and the Argos took the win.
Dennis poured in a season-high 17 points, including a 4-for-5 night from beyond the arc, with seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Following these next two contests, Academy of Art stays on the road with a Feb. 25 game against Grand Canyon in Phoenix, AZ and a rematch with Dixie State in St. George, UT on Feb. 27.
