Glendale, AZ- The Academy of Art University women's tennis team played their final match of the Paseo Tournament Sunday afternoon against Midwestern State University. After a tough double header the day before, the women faced the challenge of coming out for a third game less than 12 hours after their grueling day. Things looked promising for the Urban Knights as they started out with two singles wins to start the game. But the doubles proved costly for AAU and they ended up losing 6-3.

“After the double header we played the day before, the girls really showed their character handling a difficult match in the midday sun,” said Head Coach Dave Allen.

Standouts Laone "Lala" Botshoma and Diane Phan won their singles matches to start the game. Botshoma defeated Alex Odell-Michels 7-2, 7-5, and Phan won over Kaja Banas 7-6, (7-4), 6-3. The Urban Knights dropped their next three singles matches but picked things up again when Maria "Belen" Tenorio came out victorious over her opponent. Tenorio won 6-4, 6-2. The teams were tied 3-3 heading into doubles.

After winning three of their six singles matches is was up to the doubles teams to determine the outcome of the game.  Midwestern State University however, dominated the doubles matches to secure their win over the Urban Knights. All three of AAU's doubles pairs were defeated by Midwestern States'.

“Despite suffering the loss, the team is looking much stronger than last year,” commented Coach Allen. “Based on the actual performance of the Urban Knights in this difficult tournament, we look goof four our next several matches.”

After the loss the Academy of Art University's record falls to 2-4 overall. The Urban Knights will play next on February 23rd against PacWest members Dominican University.Game time is scheduled for 1:30 PM in San Rafael, CA.
