Glendale, AZ- Academy of art University women's tennis team competed in two matches nearly back- to- back in the second day of the Paseo Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Urban Knights played Montana State University Billings in their first game and came away with a 6-3 victory. In the second match of the day, the Knights played Western New Mexico and were barely defeated by a score of 5-4.
Montana State University Billings started the game off with a singles win when Ana Juarez defeated AAU's Diane Phan 6-3, 6-0. The Urban Knights then rallied to pull off four wins in their next five singles games. Laone "Lala" Botshoma defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-3; Paola Correa Fe won by 7-5, 6-4; Maria "Belen" Tenorio won in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6; and Anna Ritchie succeeded over her opponent 6-2, 6-2. “Belen Tenorio had an amazing singles match,” Head Coach Dave Allen said. “Though she lost the first set 4-6 and despite an injury to her leg, she pushed through the match. She ended up playing some of the best tennis I've ever seen her play all in extremely hot conditions. It gave us a huge win.”
In the doubles competition, the Urban Knights won two of their three matches to secure their victory over the Yellowjackets. Diane Phan and Laone "Lala" Botshoma paired up and won 8-4, and Paola Correa Fe and Anna Ritchie defeated the MSU Billings' team of Lena Macomsom and Rikki Peach 8-6.

After defeating the Yellowjackets of MSU Billings, the Urban Knight had to practically turn right around and face a rested Western New Mexico team. The Academy of Art University won three of their six singles matches. Laone "Lala" Botshoma defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-3; Paola Correa Fe came out on top with a score of 6-2, 6-3; and Maria "Belen" Tenorio won 7-5, 6-2.
It was up to the doubles matches as a deciding factor in the overall game. The Urban Knights won their first doubles when Diane Phan and Laone "Lala" Botshoma again teamed up and defeated Doris Berberic and Nikolina Vukadin 8-5. However, the next two Urban Knights pairs would come up short in their doubles game, and the Knights ended up barely being edged out by Western New Mexico with a score of 5-4.
After their great games on Saturday, PacWest opponents BYU Hawaii recognized AAU's achievements on the season this far. “BYU-Hawaii made an extremely nice gesture by giving our team a box of macadamia nut chocolates because they appreciated how our team competes and what a class act they are," Coach Dave Allen said. "It is nice to have a team ranked as high as they are recognizing the Urban Knights for our competitiveness in only our second year as a program.”
“Also a special thanks to Dr. David T. Porter, head coach of both BYU-Hawaii tennis teams, and his team for such an outstanding gesture,” added Coach Allen. “Despite our competitiveness, it's nice to have the camaraderie between schools.”
