2010 ENDS WITH BACK-TO-BACK GAMES FOR URBAN KNIGHTS
Nearly two weeks removed from an 86-73 victory over Bethany University, Academy of Art University men's basketball prepares to close out its non-conference season and 2010 strong. ART U travels across the bay to face California Maritime Academy and Holy Names University in HNU's New Year's Classic this week.
OPENING TIP
Game one of the HNU Tournament pits Academy of Art against Cal Maritime this Wednesday, Dec. 29. The contest will tip off at 4:00 PM. On the following day, Dec. 30, ART U faces host Holy Names at 6:00 PM. Both games will take place inside Tobin Gymnasium. Live Stats will be avaliable for both games here.
KNIGHT WATCH
After impressive outings in the Knights' win against Bethany, both senior forward Jonathan Burnett and junior forward Keith Davis earned Pacific West Conference Weekly Top 10 honors. In the Dec. 18 contest, Burnett scored a career-high 21 points with 10 rebounds. He currently leads the Pacific West Conference in field goal percentage (61.4%). Davis added 17 points, eight rebounds, and a season-high four assists in a game where ART U dealt out 20 assists as a team. Freshman forward William Overton, Jr., who paces the PacWest in scoring, also had a strong night with 20 points.
SCOUTING THE KEELHAULERS
Cal Maritime Academy heads into Wednesday's contest sporting a 3-10 overall record. Despite a tough start to the season, the Keelhaulers did defeat PacWest Conference foe Notre Dame de Namur, 73-70, in an exhibition game on Nov. 2. From there, CSUM sustained eight consecutive losses before winning back-to-back contests against Lewis-Clark State College (82-75 OT) and Lewis & Clark (83-71). Cal Maritime is led by forward Michael Weimer, who averages just over 12 points per game and totaled 30 points in the two recent victories. Guards Haven Piatt and Josh Greenwell are each averaging 11 points per contest.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Although Holy Names sits at 7-8 on the season, the Hawks have been a different team on the road (5-2) versus at home (1-5). HNU began its season with three losses inside Tobin Gymnasium, but they bounced back with a 77-69 win on the road against San Diego Christian on Nov. 11. The Hawks split in their Thanksgiving Classic at home and recently won four of their last five during a week-long road swing. Reaching 90 points or more in three of its victories, Holy Names looks to forward David Scott for offensive firepower. He averages 21.4 points per game and shoots 61 percent from the floor. Forward Joshua Smith adds 12 points per contest.
ART U SPREADS THE WEALTH AGAINST BETHANY
The final Urban Knight home game of 2010, an 86-73 victory over Bethany University, was a complete team effort. Utilizing a 14-2 run early on and a 10-2 burst to close out the first half, Academy of Art had its offense flowing with 51 points in the opening period. ART U also offered a season-best 20 assists on the night.
In the second half, the Bruins battled back, but the Knights never let their lead drop below double digits due to timely baskets from Overton, Jr., Burnett, and Davis down the stretch. Burnett, who was 8-of-8 to start the game, ended his evening with a new career-high of 21 points along with 10 rebounds. Four different ART U players scored in double figures in the win.
