ART U Women Drop 63-65 Contest at the Buzzer to Sonoma State University

The Academy of Art women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss last night, to drop a final second 63-65 decision to Sonoma State University at Art Acker Gym in Chico, CA on Saturday evening. “We had an opportunity to tie at the buzzer, but fell short,” Head Coach Lindsey Yamasaki said. “This was a tough loss for us tonight, we are right there. We are improving every night and are ready for a win.” The Urban Knights had a 92% night from the free throw line to keep contest close. ART U got to the line 17 times and connected on 15 of them. Overall, the Urban Knights forced 25 Sonoma State turnovers, and registered 35 points off those turnovers.

Tonight's match was a much closer contest in the first half than last night, with no team leading by more than five points. Even though the Urban Knights never led through the first, they shot an impressive 36% from the field to keep the contest within striking distance. Jessica Nolan was a spark for ART U early on. The senior went 3-6 from the floor and combined for six points and five rebounds in the first. As a team, the Urban Knights forced 12 turnovers and notched seven steals. Verity Peets and Madeline Houston each went into the locker room with two steals a piece. A Devin London lay-up with 00:03 seconds on the clock sent the Urban Knights into halftime down by just three points, 26-23.

Sonoma State opened up the second half with a 5-3 run, putting the Seawolves up by seven, 33-26, within the first three minutes of play. ART U would bring the score to within four points with a quick steal and breakaway lay-up by Lorraine Etchell. However, Sonoma State capitalized on missed opportunities by the Urban Knights and extended their lead to the largest of the contest, 37-48 with 11:06 left on the clock. A big block by Alisa Griggs lit a fire within the Urban Knights, and over the next three minutes, the Urban Knights' offense came alive.

ART U went on a 10-0 run capped by two Nolan free throws which brought the game to within one point, 47-48, with 7:23 on the clock. Devin London hit a big 3-pointer to bring the Knights to within one, and on the next play down the floor, the Urban Knights took their first lead of the game, 60-59, on back to back free throws by Peets. Sonoma would extend their lead back to four with a minute left in the contest, but another big 3pt shot by London would bring ART U to within one point, 63-64. With 00:30 seconds remaining in the game, Jessica Nolan swiped her third steal of the half to give the Urban Knights a chance to take the match. Two missed opportunities down the stretch, including one at the buzzer, gave Sonoma State the 63-65 victory.

Sonoma State was led by Jaclyn Bisordi and Aly Henington who each finished with 11 points. Bisordi went 6-7 from the free throw line, while Henington finished 3-4 from 3pt territory. As a team, the Seawolves were 44.4% from the field in the game, and outrebounded the Urban Knights 38-26.

ART U was led by Lorraine Etchell and Verity Peets, both finished the game with 13 points. Peets was 3-9 from the field, and a perfect 7-7 from the line. The senior also registered two steals in the contest. Etchell was 4-7 from the field, 1-2 from downtown, and 4-4 from the free throw line. Etchell finished with two assists and three steals. Devin London hit some big shots down the stretch for ART U and finished the game with nine points. London was 2-3 from beyond the arc. Jessica Nolan finished the game with eight points and eight rebounds. As team, the Urban Knights shot 50% from 3pt land, and finished with six less turnovers than Sonoma, 19-25.

Up next for ART U is a trip to Salem, OR where they will take part in the Willamette University Tournament. ART U first faces Corbin University on Nov. 26, followed by a game against host institution Willamette University on Nov. 27.
