Urban Knights Ready to Take on the Vulcans and Sea Warriors

HOME SWEET HOME

The Academy of Art will kick off 2010 with a five game home stand. The Urban Knights, who have not played at home thus far, completed their non-conference season 4-7, and will begin Pacific West Conference play Tuesday Jan 5. They host University of HawaiiHilo and Hawaii Pacific University before facing three of the Pac West's mainland teams.

 

TIME OFF

The Urban Knights had one week off to prepare for the start of Conference play after their final non-conference game against Division I Sacramento State University on Dec. 21. Despite the Urban Knights strongest start [scoring 40 1st half points] thus far in the season the Hornets proved to be to much for the Urban Knights as they outscored AAU 52 – 32 in the second half of the game to take the game 92 - 70. Despite the loss four Urban Knights' were named to the PacWest Top 10 Honor Roll, Jessica Nolan, Lorraine Etchell, Sondra Stilwell, and Madeline Houston all made the list for AAU.


Houston earned her first nomination by posting 16 points, three rebounds, two assists, three steals and a pair of three-pointers.  Nolan earned the honor by scoring nine points and collecting 10 rebounds in the Urban Knights 92-70 loss. Nolan also dished out three assists and two steals. Etchell scored her second nomination by scoring 17 points and grabbing four rebounds. Stilwell produced 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the Urban Knights lone game of the week.


SCOUTING THE VULCANS
The University of Hawaii - Hilo is coming off their eighth loss of the season coming into the contest against the Urban Knights. Hina Kimitete and Kirsti
Imai have been the Vulcans leading scorers thus far, with Kimitete nabbing the top spot in eight out of our the Vulcans 11 games. Kimitete leads the Vuclans in almost every category; she leads the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) steals (40), assists (30) and is shooting 41% from the field. Kayce Kirihara is the next on the team in scoring; she is averaging 9.9 ppg and is right behind Kimitete with 27assists.

 

 

SCOUTING THE SEA WARRIORS

The Sea Warriors started their season by dropping their first three games, they have since won two of their last four matches coming into their contest with the Urban Knights. The Sea Warriors have four players averaging double figures with Tiffany Wilson leading the pack with 12.5 ppg, and shooting 42% from the floor. Genesis Lewis is right behind her with 11.4 ppg, she also leads the team in steals (22), and rebounds (56). Jazzmi Awa-Williams and Mana Hopkins round out the top spots averaging 10.8 and 10.3 ppg respectively, with Awa - Williams grabbing 54 rebounds, 26 of which were offensive.

 

 

LAST GAME RECAP

Academy of Art University (4-7) was on the losing side of their battle against Division I Sacramento State University (3-8) Monday. Led by sophomore guard Lorraine Etchell's 13 first half points, AAU recorded a season high 40 points in the first half, but lost steam in the second half to fall 92-70.

Leading by as many as seven, AAU started the game strong shooting 17 of 39 from the floor for a 40-40 tie at the half. However, the Urban Knights were unable to keep up with Sacramento State in the second half as their offense stalled connecting on only 29 percent of their shots.

Overall, the Urban Knights looked sharp against their Division I opponent as they committed a season low 16 turnovers and scored 19 second chance points against the Hornets. “I am extremely proud of the way we played. We rose to the occasion and played at a high level by doing the little things well” Coach Lindsey Yamaski said.       

The Urban Knights received great performances from all over the court tonight. Etchell, who entered the game averaging 7.6 points per game, led the Urban Knights with 17 points knocking down 3 of 7 from behind the arc as she pulled down four rebounds.

Freshman guard Madeline Houston had a breakout game as she notched a season high 16 points. Houston was 7 of 17 from the floor and handed out three assists. Junior forward Jessica Nolan grabbed a game high 10 rebounds for the Urban Knights, as she continued to dominate the board. Nolan added nine points and three assists versus the Hornets.           

Senior guard Sondra Stilwell controlled the offense for AAU as she dished out eight assists. Stilwell also picked up three rebounds and scored 12 points against Sacramento State.

Emily Christensen was the standout for the Hornets. The junior, who is second on the team in scoring, recorded 24 points in the contest. She hit 10 of 17 shots from the field including 4 of 9 from deep and pulled down four rebounds.

The game was the last for AAU in 2009. “I am happy to be going into the break and the upcoming conference schedule knowing that we have come along way and I am very proud of our team's effort tonight” said Yamaski. The Urban Knights will return to action on January 5th when they will play their first home game of the season. AAU will take on University of Hawaii at Hilo at 5:30 p.m. at UCSF in San Francisco, Calif.
