Honolulu, HI --- The Academy of Art women's basketball team dropped a 57-79 decision tonight on the Sea Warriors home court. The Urban Knights were unable to stop HPU's leading scorers, Jazzmin Awa - Williams and Genesis Lewis, who went for 21 and 16 points respectively. It was AAU's bench that helped keep the Urban Knights in the game. The Academy of Art got a team high 12 points from
Jasmine English, while
Ashleigh Frazier also added 11 points in the loss. Both also notched five rebounds a piece. The loss drops AAU to 2-4 in conference play and 6-11overall. The win for the Sea Warriors keeps them in first place and undefeated in conference play.
The Urban Knights started the first half with a lay-up by
Verity Peets to put them up by two early. HPU's leading scorer brought the game to its first tie when she scored the first two of her 21 points. A steal by
Jessica Nolan that led to a lay-up by
Lorraine Etchell gave AAU their largest lead of the night, 6-2. HPU broke the second and final tie just four minutes into the game and took the lead for good. The Sea Warriors gradually expanded their lead over the Urban Knights and got the gap as wide as 18 points before going into the locker up 21 - 37.
The Second half wasn't much better for AAU as HPU continued to pull away from the young Urban Knight squad.But, the Academy of Art women kept fighting and were able to cut the lead to 11 points with about six minutes remaining in the game. The PacWest powerhouse proved to be too much for the Knights to handle, and in a matter of minutes the lead had ballooned back to 22 points. The Sea Warriors took their largest lead, 24, with one minute remaining in regulation. As time expired the Sea Warriors picked up their 8 straight win by a score of 79-57.
Hawaii Pacific had five players score in double digits with leading scored Awa-Williams finishing with a game high 21 points. Genesis Lewis managed a double-double, 16 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Britney Ronolo was next on the team as she added 13 points on 4-6 shooting and a perfect 4-4 from the line. Mana Hopkins and Paris Gravely each chipped in with 10 and 11 points respectively.
The Urban Knights were paced by
Jasmine English who lead the team with 12 points on 4-9 shooting and 4-5 from the line, she also added five rebounds.
Ashleigh Frazier also chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
Sondra Stilwell and
Verity Peets finished with nine and eight points, while
Peets grabbed a team high seven rebounds.
AAU will continue their road trip on Monday Feb. 1, when they take on University of Hawaii-Hilo in the teams second meeting. Game time is set for 5:30 PM (Hawaii time).
