San Rafael, CA—The Academy of Art University faced off against Dominican University across the bay on Monday afternoon. Coming off a tough loss in overtime two days earlier, the Urban Knights came out eager still looking for their first win of the season. They scored first taking an early lead, but that single goal wouldn't be enough to hold the Dominican Penguins. The Penguins scored shortly after, tying the game at one. After battling again through two overtimes, the Urban Knights ended up tying the game with Dominican with a final score of 1-1.
Freshman Carmela Doerr again helped lead the Urban Knights this game. She scored an unassisted goal (and the Urban Knights' only goal of the match) in the 16th minute of the game. But the Penguins answered back quickly scoring an unassisted goal of their own in the 33rd minute of play. The Urban Knights only managed three shots the entire match. One was in the first half, one in the first over time and finally one in second over time. Dominican out shot them 13-3. Again it was outstanding goal keeping and solid defense that kept the Academy of Art University in the game.
The Urban Knights' goal keeper Solveig Barnes had a great game for her team. She played all 110 minutes of the match giving up only one goal and posting four saves on the day. Carmela Doerr had one shot on goal and one goal, while Morgan LeFever had two shots in the game.
For the Dominican Penguins Mary Wheeler scored the lone goal for her team, while managing two shots in the match. Eleanna Mendez had five shots, two which were on goal, and Mallory Englehardt had one shot and one shot on goal on the day.
After the tie, the Academy of Art University's record is at 0-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference, while Dominican University's record is 2-3-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference. The Urban Knights play next on Thursday September 24th to start their seven game home-stand. They are set to take on Notre Dame de Namur University at 1:00pm at Boxer stadium.
