Kona, HI (4/8/09) -- In a back-and-forth contest leading up to the Kona Tournament in Hawaii, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to Chaminade University. AAU is now 5-9 on the season while Chaminade is 6-8.
Sophomore
Cassy Fabiani prevailed over Audra Takara in the #1 singles spot 6-2, 6-4, but Fabiani's #2-5 counterparts could not earn victories. At #2 singles, Tiffany DeVincent bested sophomore
Laone "Lala" Botshoma in a lengthy 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 match while at #3, freshman
Maria "Belen" Tenorio and Natalie Phanphengdy played to a 3-6, 6-4, 2-1 score and could not finish. In the #4 slot, freshman
Paola Correa Fe fell to Stacey Chaussoy 6-2, 6-3 and although she had an early lead, senior
Anna Ritchie could not defeat Silkie Kawahakui in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 final at #5 singles. The final singles match was positive for the Urban Knights because freshman
Cecilia Hedin was able to take down Kiana Iwado in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
AAU managed one out of three victories in the doubles action; an 8-4 decision at #2 with
Botshoma and
Ritchie combining for the win. In #1 doubles,
Fabiani and
Correa Fe fought hard against Takara and DeVincent, but could not pull it out and lost 8-6. Finally, at #3, Kawahakui and Iwado defeated
Hedin and freshman
Solveig Barnes 8-0.
The seeding has now officially been set for the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship which begins at 9 A.M. on Thursday, April 9 at the Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. For Academy of Art University, the 6
th seed, a matchup is set against the 3
rd seed, University of Hawaii at Hilo, and will begin at 1:00 PM.
