AAU Can't Conquer Seattle U In Season Finale

Box Score

Seattle – After trailing by only six points at halftime, Academy of Art University women's basketball wound up dropping a 80-63 decision at the Connolly Center in AAU's final game of the season. Four Urban Knights scored in double figures led by senior forward Levalasi Key who put up 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the final game of her career. Junior point guard Sondra Stilwell had another stat sheet-stuffing night with 12 points, four assists, four rebounds and six steals in the loss.

Looking to avenge their previous 67-49 home defeat against the Redhawks, the Knights stayed with Seattle for the first five minutes. With a seven-point lead, the Redhawks then executed a 12-0 run which was soon answered by a 14-6 surge from AAU to end the opening period. With the score 36-30 in favor of Seattle University, the teams headed to the locker room for halftime.

The Redhawk advantage bounced back-and-forth between double and single digits in the first few minutes of the second half, but a 7-2 push by the Urban Knights brought the visitors to within just four points as the clock read 13:41. Freshman point guard Lorraine Etchell had a layup and a jumper in the run. However, the home team responded with a 14-2 burst over the next four minutes and held on for their 17th victory of the season.

Behind the efforts of Key and Stilwell, junior guard Caprice Hall added 12 points including a 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. Etchell had 11 points and four assists of her own while freshman guard Vanessa Wilkins and sophomore forward Miranda Wiley combined for 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Mercedes Alexander had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Redhawks, but it was Breanna Salley and Elle Kerfoot  who turned in 17 points apiece to lead all players. Seattle University got the better of the Knights with 16 more points in the paint and nearly a 57% shooting clip from the floor in the second half.

This concludes the inaugural Academy of Art University women's basketball season. The Urban Knights finish the year 6-19 overall.
