Lacey, WA– Academy of Art University's (3-2) second half comeback fell short Thursday night when they were defeated 63-53 by Saint Martin's University (2-2). The Urban Knights were on the losing end of a hard fought defensive battle between the two teams.
AAU's leading scorer, senior guard Sondra Stilwell continued to shine as she led the team with a game high 16 points. Stilwell knocked down seven of her 15 shots, two of which were behind the arc. She also handed out two assists and had a game high four steals.
The Urban Knights started the game slow offensively shooting only 25 percent from the floor and turning the ball over 12 times as they fell behind 17-28 at the half.
The second half proved to be different as sophomore guard Lorraine Etchell started sharp hitting a three pointer to bring the score within eight points. Throughout the half, the team hit just under 50 percent of their shots and outscored by the Saints 37-36.
Junior forward Jessica Nolan continued her domination on the boards against the Saints as she grabbed nine rebounds. Entering the game, Nolan averaged 10 rebounds per game and has been a strong inside presence for the Urban Knights.
AAU also received great performances from Etchell and freshman guard Madeline Houston. Etchell stood out as she added 12 points, hit 4 of her 6 three point shots, and pulled down five rebounds for the Urban Knights. In only the fifth game of her collegiate career, Houston played well dishing out a team high five assists and made three steals in the contest.
For the Saints, Krissy Bassett scored a team high 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Dara Zack, who has led Saint Martin's all season averaging 11 rebounds a game, grabbed 16 rebounds and added 12 points in the contest.
Looking to bounce back form the loss, the Academy of Art women's basketball team will be back in action Saturday, November 5th when they take on Central Washington University. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Washington.
