Belmont, CA – The Urban Knights took the lead less than three minutes into the game and held on for their fourth win of the season Saturday evening. Academy of
Art University (4-6) defeated
Cal State East Bay (0-8) 76-67 in their second game of the NDNU Classic.
AAU jumped out to an early lead in the first half and did not look back. The Urban Knights led by as many as 11 points, as an outstanding performance by senior Sondra Stilwell added 16 first half points. The team hit 12 of their 32 shots from the floor to give them a 36-38 lead at the end of the first period.
Continuing their offensive success, the Urban Knights began the second half with a 22-5 run. The Pioneers answered, twice bringing the score to within one, but AAU was able to hold off their comeback. As a team, the Urban Knights shot 60 percent in the second half connecting on 12 of 20 baskets.
Another strong point for AAU was their ability to capitalize on the Pioneer's mistakes as they scored 32 points off of 32 turnovers. The Urban Knights also showed once again how versatile they can be. The team received 18 points from the bench and handed out 15 assists against the Pioneers.
Stilwell, the team's leading scorer, finished the game with 27 points, a season high for the Urban Knights. Twice named to the PacWest honor roll this season, Stilwell proved herself yet again knocking down 10 of 17 shots including 3-6 from behind the arc.
Another stellar performance came from Urban Knight forward Verity Peets. The junior finished the contest with 20 points and a team high seven rebounds. Peets was a perfect 8 of 8 at the free throw line, and she also recorded a block and a steal against the Pioneers.
Junior Jessica Nolan continued to be a defensive force for AAU. She entered the game as the team's leading rebounder, and pulled down seven rebounds against Cal State East Bay. Nolan also added two blocks and three steals in the game.
Andrea Rodriguez led the way for Cal State East Bay as she recorded 19 points in the game. She hit 6 of 10 shots from the field including 5 of 9 from the 3 pt line. Lauren Lucchesti led the Poineers in rebounding with nine in the contest.
Looking to make it two in a row, AAU will head to Sacramento, Calif. to take on Division I powerhouse Cal State Sacramento. The game is set for 5:05 p.m. on Monday December 21st.
