LOOKING AHEAD:
When AAU returns to San Francisco they will play their two final home games of the season on February 4th and February 6th against Seattle University and Hawaii Pacific University. Seattle University is 10-7 (as of 1/22/09) and should be a tough match up for the Urban Knights. Seattle U has more than double the amount of players than AAU and that lack of depth may prove to be a tough obstacle for the Urban Knights to overcome. For the Seattle University Redhawks, Breanna Salley is averaging 17.3 points per game. Hawaii Pacific University who is 7-8 (as of 1/22/09) will be a nicer match up for the Urban Knights who are averaging 64.5 points per game while the Sea Warriors are averaging 54 points per game.
SCOUTING THE SILVERSWORDS:
Chaminade University is 0-14 on the season. The Urban Knights will go into the meeting riding a two game winning streak and will hope to continue their streak against the winless Silverswords. Chaminade received their closest loss of the season on Jan. 15 against cross-island opponent BYU-Hawaii, 62-52. The Silverswords average margin of defeat is 25 points while the Academy of University's margin is 11 points. Junior guard Samantha Saito is averaging 13.1 points per game, 2.6 assists, and 34 minutes per game for Chaminade while Senior forward Jasmine Dulan is chipping in with 10.2 points per game, 5.9 rebounds and also is averaging 34 minutes per game.
SCOUTING THE SEASIDERS:
BYU-Hawaii is 6-7 on the season and 2-2 in conference play (as of 1/22/09) with their last win coming against Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 17, 69-61. The Seasiders started the season off 3-1 before dropping their next four matches to non-conference opponents. Of their last 10 games they have won four and dropped six, and are on a two game winning streak beating Chaminade University and Notre Dame de Namur. A key to BYU-Hawaii's success lies in the hands of senior forward Latoya Wiley who is averaging 25 points per game and 13.5 rebounds while playing 36 minutes per game.
SCOUTING THE VULCANS:
The University of Hawaii – Hilo is 7-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play, with their two wins coming from BYU-Hawaii on Jan. 6 and Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 10 and their three losses coming at the hands of Hawaii Pacific University on Jan. 2, Dixie State College on Jan. 17 and Grand Canyon University on Jan. 20. Helping the Vulcans are senior forward Sheila Azevedo who is averaging 11.9 points per game and who is grabbing 6.3 boards a game, right behind her is Hina Kimitete who is averaging 11.8 points per game and three assists and is playing 31 minutes per game, while Ashley Kualii and Amanda Adams are averaging 9.8 and 9.2 points per game respectively.
THEIR LAST GAME AGAINST THE REDHAWKS:
The Academy of Art Women's Basketball team (4-15) was all business Saturday evening at the Heritage Center in Redding, California as they defeated the Simpson University Red Hawks (3-14), 88-73. The Urban Knights established their dominance from the tip-off, jumping out to an early 20-9 lead within the first 10 minutes, and never looked back. The young AAU team looked more poised than they did in their previous meeting just one-week prior. The Urban Knights would maintain the lead through the remainder of the game. The Red Hawks were able to get within 12 points in the second half but that was as close as they would get.
For AAU Caprice Hall lead all scorers with 25 points finishing 9-17 from the field and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, Lorraine Etchell also finished with a career high 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Sondra Stilwell added 18 points four assists and two steals. On the glass freshman forward Vanessa Wilkins grabbed 10 boards and dished out three assists.
