Shamsud-din joined the Academy of Art men's basketball coaching staff as an assistant in November of 2017, on the eve of the program's winningest season to date. In the regular season's final two weeks, Academy of Art defeated Hawaii Pacific, Notre Dame de Namur, and finally Concordia in double overtime on
Senior Day to finish 11-9 in PacWest play (12-14 overall) and just one victory shy of qualifying for the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament.
The Urban Knights would make the tournament in the year that followed, knocking off No. 12 Chaminade while going 6-0 against local PacWest competition in Notre Dame de Namur, Dominican, and Holy Names. A
win over Biola on the season's final day led Academy of Art to enter the PacWest Tournament as the No. 5 seed, propelling them into a matchup with fourth-seeded Azusa Pacific. An
incredibly hard-fought effort sent the game into overtime, but the Cougars ended up prevailing in the end. Meanwhile, Shamsud-din was also simultaneously spending time as an assistant coach with the women's basketball program.
In his own collegiate career, Shamsud-din played for the Urban Knights from 2011-2013 after spending time at the Division I and junior college levels (Cal State Fullerton and North Idaho College respectively). During his two years with ART U, he remains the program's career leading scorer (876 points) and leader in field goals made (302) as well as top five in three-point field goal percentage (.367), 3-pointers made (99), assists per game (3.3) and steals per game (1.5). In his junior season, Shamsud-din was given an
All-PacWest Honorable Mention, was once named PacWest Player of the Week and made PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll on nine separate occasions. He began his senior year as a member of the
Preseason All-PacWest Teamand was later named to the
All-PacWest Second Team.
After finishing his eligibility, Shamsud-din jumpstarted his coaching career, serving as a graduate assistant of the Academy of Art men's basketball program. With his Multimedia Communications degree from ART U in-hand, he spent the next year competing professionally in Mexico with Abejas Guanajuato. The following year, he accepted a position with North Idaho College as the men's basketball assistant coach. In his first of two seasons with the program, he helped lead the Cardinals to a 35-0 record and a No. 1 NJCAA national ranking. The following year saw more success for NIC as they posted a 26-4 record under his tutelage.
With three years of coaching under his belt, Shamsud-din returned to the professional arena for the 2016-17 season. In Spain, he competed for the CB Quart Germans Cruz as a point guard and led the team in both scoring and assists.
Shamsud-din lives in San Francisco with his two children: Kamryn Shamsud-din and Wesley Wade.
