Urban Knights' Doubles Win Answered By Eagles Comeback

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Academy of Art women's tennis matched up against the Eagles of No. 12 Embry-Riddle at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Thursday, and although the Urban Knights won in doubles once again to take an early advantage, ERAU ultimately took the match 4-2.

Continuing its recent success on the doubles side of competition, ART U took two matches with 6-2 scores. Freshman Amelija Supuniece and junior Erica Hellbe, ranked No. 25 nationally as a duo, finished first for the Knights, battling Itxaso Blanco and Laura Cuesta Bret, ranked No. 21 nationally as a pair, on Court 1. Senior Viktoria Leth and junior Paulina Alvarez came in next for on Court 3, defeating Kaylee Kirivong and Maja Issler. Lastly in doubles, sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean took down Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo and Carla Cabero del Hierro for the clinch on Court 2.

ERAU performed well out the gates in singles, taking the first three matches on the day on Court 6, Court 3, and Court 4 in that order. Plazas responded for ART U as she defeated Issler, ranked No. 51 nationally in singles, on Court 2 with a 6-2, 6-0 score to bring the Knights back within one at 3-2. To clinch the match, however, ERAU won once again on Court 5 to end the day, as Christa Wira Hadipoernomo narrowly escaped a late comeback by Alvarez in their second set. Not able to complete her match was Supulniece, ranked No. 50 in singles, who held a lead over Blanco on Court 1 with the score set at 6-4, 5-4 (30-15) when the match was decided as unfinished.

The Knights will next visit No. 39 Rollins tomorrow in Winter Park, Fla. for their last match of the trip, with first serve set for 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT).
