ART U Ends Florida Trip With 4-3 Victory Over #39 Rollins

WINTER PARK, FLA. – Batting their third straight ranked opponent, Academy of Art women's tennis came out with a win against No. 39 Rollins on Friday, going toe-to-toe with the Tars and taking the contest 4-3. 

For the fifth consecutive contest, the Urban Knights recorded the doubles point to start off the action, but this occurrence requiring a comeback. After dropping the first match on Court 2, freshman Amelija Supulniecce and junior Erica Hellbe, ranked No. 25 nationally in doubles, responded by taking down Polina Vlasova and Erin Yaroshuk on Court 1 with a 6-4 score to tie doubles up 1-1. With all eyes set on Court 3 amid a tight battle, senior Viktoria Leth and junior Paulina Alvarez came up clutch for the squad by defeating Katie Groves and Eve Wasil 7-5 to start the day off hot, giving the Knights the early 1-0 advantage and a point needed for the overall win.

After the Tars tied up the score 1-1 on Court 6, the Knights jumped ahead with help from Supulniece, ranked No. 50 nationally in singles, on Court 1, where she defeated Vlasova, ranked No. 58 nationally in singles, 6-1, 6-4. Plazas came in next to push the lead to 3-1 after taking down Nancy Liu, ranked No. 68 nationally in singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Court 2, winning her sixth straight doubles match and first of the season in a third set. Pushing for a comeback was Rollins with a win on Court 3 to bring the Tars within one, but a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-1 triumph for Leth against Polina Ligay on Court 4 would clinch the win for the squad over their ranked opponent. 

The Knights, now 8-5 overall, will get a week break before taking on Dominican at home for their Senior Day on Sunday, Apr. 7 with first serve set for 3 p.m. at the Bay Club South San Francisco in Daly City, Calif.
