THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
Aiming for their second win of the season, Academy of Art women's soccer will travel up north to Arcata and challenge the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks on their home turf before hosting the Dominican Penguins, a squad that have had a similar start to the season when compared to the Urban Knights, in non-conference action.
KICKOFF
These upcoming battles with the Lumberjacks and Penguins will be afternoon contests both with a kickoff set for 1 p.m. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights via the athletics app (Apple App Store,
Google Play Store) and on
Twitter &
Instagram, as well as "Like" the
Urban Knights on Facebook for score updates, videos, and recaps.Â
KNIGHT WATCH
The Knights weren't able to get on the scoreboard in their recent rematch against Jessup, but it was not for a lack of looks, as ART U totaled six shots over the course of the match. The Knights came out firing early, with four of their shots coming in the first 22 minutes including two each from sophomore forward Danielle Medellin and senior defender Raquel Calvo Mendez. Junior defender Haley Vaughan and redshirt junior Katie Williams are the two Knights to look out for on the back line as they are the only members of the squad to play every minute so far in the season.Â
Graduate student goalkeeper Nicole Peoples made her 2023 starting debut last match and has already racked up nine saves through two appearances. If given the start in goal going forward, Peoples could be a force for the Knights as she recorded a .930 goals against average with 57 saves through eight matches in her 2021 campaign.
CHOPPING DOWN THE LUMBERJACKS
Academy of Art's visit will be the fourth match in a row that Cal Poly Humboldt (3-0-1) will host. The Lumberjacks are currently ranked with their three wins, all one-score differences. Emilia Long has been the focal point of the Lumberjacks' offense currently with four goals and two assists through just 225 minutes of action. Carson Thomson-Terrel has been in goal for the squad, giving up only four goals through four games while shutting out Central Washington and Western Oregon. This will be the first match since 2019 where Cal Poly Humboldt and Academy of Art have faced off, with the last meeting being a 2-0 victory for the Urban Knights.
PUNISHING THE PENGUINS
Dominican (1-4-0) will be looking for its first win since its first match of the season, as the Penguins are currently on a four-game losing streak. DUC's last three matches have been against CCAA schools, giving up six goals total and scoring twice throughout them. Three Penguins have scored their four total goals through five matches this season, which includes scores from Miranda Gregory, Alison McNeal, and Alejandra Melendez. Rylee Buesing and Natalie Haro have been splitting time in goal this season, and it is possible that both may play in their upcoming match with the Knights. ART U currently holds a 5-7 home record against the Penguins ahead of their upcoming match.
NON-CONFERENCE REMATCH GOES WAY OF THE WARRIORS
In the teams' second meeting in less than two weeks, Academy of Art women's soccer contended with Jessup throughout the first half of the Sept. 12 contest at Warrior Soccer Field where the home team once again prevailed with three goals to their credit in a 3-0 final score.
LOOKING AHEAD
Academy of Art will continue their homestand as Pacific West Conference play begins with three Hawaii schools coming to San Francisco that includes UH Hilo, Chaminade, and Hawaii Pacific all starting on Sept. 25.
