FRESNO, Calif. – Back at Fresno Pacific's Haak Tennis Complex for the second consecutive day, No. 25 Academy of Art women's tennis once again found itself watching the final singles match determine its neutral site contest versus Point Loma. The Urban Knights claimed the doubles point, but the Sea Lions outlasted ART U in a three-set battle in the third singles position to win 4-3.
Academy of Art had the early momentum as freshmen
Maria Vittoria Casucci and
Paulina Alvarez topped Faith Pearson and Arianna Audelo 6-3 in the second doubles spot before ART U (1-2) took the point on freshman
Erica Hellbe and sophomore
Viktoria Leth's identical 6-3 victory in the third matchup.
Singles action favored the Knights early with freshman
Julia Ortega yielding just one game to Samantha Neilson in a 6-1, 6-0 win at the fourth position, but the match soon shifted with PLNU (3-1) claiming wins at five, six, and two. The teams then evened at 3-3 after sophomore
Sofia Ragona bested Audelo 7-6, 7-5 in the first top spot, but a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win for Thelma Sepulveda finished off the 4-3 result for Point Loma.
The Urban Knights' first home match of the season is up next as Academy of Art hosts Holy Names on Feb. 18 at noon from the Bay Club SF Tennis in Daly City.
