ART U Comeback Falls Short Despite Firsts For Two Knights

HAYWARD, Calif. – Academy of Art men's soccer was chasing the comeback attempt during Sunday's Pacific West Conference clash with Holy Names, scoring three goals in the second frame with two coming via penalty kicks. However, it was too little, too late as HNU matched with three second-half goals of their own to hold on for the 5-3 win in ART U's final leg of the Bay Area Clásico Cup

Two goals in the first 45 minutes from the Hawks (6-5-3, 4-3-0 PacWest) proved to be the difference in the match with the Urban Knights (3-9-3, 0-6-1 PacWest), with Holy Names quickly finding the back of the net in the 15th minute with the first goal from Erik Arias. Shortly after HNU added the insurance goal, as the fourth marker of the season from Gabriel Ventura came in the 23rd minute.

Out of the break Holy Names continued the offensive pressure early in the second frame, putting a pair of goals in the back of the net in the 52nd and 56th minute to double the lead. Elio Corral was the beneficiary of a Ventura pass for the first tally, Ventura's third point of the day, while the second goal was an unassisted strike from Arias for his second of the match.

Down but not out, ART U turned up their offensive attack and eventually found the scoreboard, as sophomore midfielder Cameryon Stewart netted the first ART U marker of his career after a solid attacking play by the Knights. A long cross was played from the right to the left wing just inside the box, where redshirt freshman forward Elvis Mensah collected the ball before playing a short pass back to Stewart, who blasted the ball into the right side of the net.

HNU was able to respond in the 85th minute, seemingly stopping the ART U momentum with a goal from Aidan Rios to move the score to 5-1. However, Academy of Art continued its push forward, ultimately drawing a penalty in the box just mere seconds later still within the 85th minute. Lining up for the opportunity was junior midfielder Gilly Miller, who calmly converted with a strike to the right side.

In what felt like déjà vu after the ensuing kickoff, the Knights were able to steal the ball and once more drew a foul inside the left edge of the box to earn an opportunity from the penalty spot. Back again was Miller, who produced the same result with his second goal of the match, still within the 85th minute. However, that is where the ART U comeback would stall.

It was the first brace of Miller's career, as he becomes the 16th Urban Knight in history to score at least two goals in a single game. Sunday's two markers push Miller to eight on the season, tying him for second-most in a single season in program history along with Andrew "Boomer" Cruz who also scored eight in the 2010 campaign, and he is now just one shy of the record currently held by Jonmundur Gretarsson set in 2013. He is now just the second Urban Knight to record 20 points in a single season, as his 21 is just one point shy of the 22 currently held by Gretarsson from that 2013 campaign.

Meanwhile, with his assist today Mensah became the second Urban Knight this season to reach double digit points (10; three goals four assists), as he joins the top 10 for assists in a single season in a tie for seventh.

Miller and Stewart led the Knight in shots with three apiece, both putting two on target, while junior midfielder Christian Schaffner generated two shot attempts of his own. Making five saves on the day was senior goalkeeper Davis King, which tied his season high.

Academy of Art will look to rebound when they return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 27 as the Knights travel to Fresno to battle FPU beginning at 7 p.m.
