FRESNO, Calif. – For the second straight match Academy of Art men's soccer junior midfielder
Gilly Miller netted a pair of goals, both of which set new ART U single-season records, putting ART U ahead of Fresno Pacific with just under 15 minutes to go. However, FPU played until the final whistle and scored its own pair of goals in the final five minutes to snatch a 3-2 victory in Pacific West Conference action.
Both of Miller's goals set new Urban Knights (3-10-3, 0-7-1 PacWest) single-season marks, with his first coming in the 53rd minute on a free kick as an equalizer to a first half tally from the Sunbirds (3-9-2, 1-6-1 PacWest). From a free kick, Miller sent the ball into the box where it bounced untouched into the back of the net, giving him his 23rd point of the season to set his first program record of the day.
Exactly 20 minutes later is when Miller secured the other half of his brace, drawing a foul in right portion of the box for an opportunity from the penalty spot. Much as he did in his previous match, Miller stepped up and smashed it to the left side, deflecting off the FPU keeper's hands and into the net to put Academy of Art in front for the first time in the 79th minute. It was his 10th goal of the season, making him the only Urban Knight to reach the double-digit mark in a campaign.
Not going away quietly, Fresno Pacific turned up the pressure in an effort to draw the match level, finally succeeding with their goal in the 86th minute. Continuing the push with the end of the match near, the Sunbirds once more found the back of the net in the 88th minute to steal the 3-2 victory.
Much like the contest, the shot battle was down the middle with each team generating 11 scoring opportunities, and it was ART U that held the edge when it came to shots on goal (5-4). Taking five of the 11 shots for the Knights was Miller, three of which were on goal, while redshirt freshman midfielder
Elvis Mensah was the only other to take multiple shots with two.
Academy of Art will return to San Francisco for the final two matches of the year, as the Urban Knights will battle Point Loma on Nov. 3 before ending the year with Concordia on Nov. 5.
