SAN FRANCISCO – A hard-fought matchup between Academy of Art women's tennis and Concordia started with the Eagles taking the doubles point, saw a comeback in singles play, but ultimately ended with the visitors to Bay Club SF Tennis winning 4-3 on Wednesday morning.
Clear and sunny conditions in San Francisco were the backdrop as doubles began and victories of 6-0 and 6-2 at the first and third positions would put CUI ahead early while leaving a closely contested second spot unfinished.
Though Concordia took the fifth singles matchup initially, ART U battled back as freshman
Julia Ortega topped Roula Emalah 6-4, 6-3 at six and freshman
Maria Vittoria Casucci confidently finished off a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 comeback versus Lisa Suzuki at three. With the overall match knotted up at 2-2, each of the final three singles pairings were crucial and the Eagles' first inkling toward a win came when Taylor Lau edged freshman
Aitana Comas Adam in the first set en route to a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the fourth position.
The match was subsequently won in the two spot as Rebekah Anderson rallied late for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 result over sophomore
Sofia Ragona. At the top slot, senior
Mariacristina Andrisani came back from down 6-3 in the first set, outplayed Ghazal Pakbaten 7-1 in a second set tiebreaker, and finished off the 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 3-2 win on her opponent's retirement to end the day.
Sustaining just its second loss of the season, Academy of Art moves to 4-2 overall while Concordia ups its record to 4-3.
ART U is slated to face Point Loma next week on Tuesday, Mar. 10 back at Bay Club SF Tennis at 9 a.m.
