SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art took on Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon at CCSF Soccer Field and battled throughout the match, but ultimately suffered a 4-0 loss.
"A very tough game from beginning to end," said head coach
Matt Martin. "Monterey Bay came in here with the intent to win the physical battles and they did for much of the game."
The Otters came out strong right away, scoring goals in the 6th and 9th minute. The first came on a corner kick that bounced between a couple players in the goal box until Jacob Penner got a foot on it and poked the ball to the back left corner. Three minutes later Walmer Martinzez buried a penalty kick in the bottom left corner. The Urban Knights held CSUMB the remainder of the period but went into the half trailing 2-0.
In the 48th minute the Otters extended their lead with another goal from Martinez. Colin O'Mahoney dribbled down the left side of the field to the corner and crossed in a ball right in front of the goal box. Martinez flew into the box and was able to get his head on the ball and place it in the back right side of the net.Â
Although CSUMB scored once more in the 88th minute to solidify their 4-0 victory, junior goalkeeper
Kris Jensson did well to mitigate the damage. Jensson collected a season-high 11 saves, more than doubling his season total in one match. On the offensive side, senior midfielder
Andrew Deans led the Knights with three shots while sophomore forward
Fannar Omarsson and junior midfielder
Jaret Gil had one shot apiece.Â
"We made some mistakes that there's no excuse for and fell behind 2-0," said Martin. "In trying to battle back, it was always uphill, because our mentality was to play the game, not just be physical, but on the day Monterey Bay was able to play after winning the physical battles and they fully deserved to win."
The Otters improve to 4-0 on the season, while ART U falls to 0-3. Academy of Art will look to bounce back strong on Thursday, Sept. 19 when they take on Saint Martin's at Paul Goode Field. Â
