ART U Battles Holy Names to 1-1 Tie

SAN FRANCISCO  – Both ART U and Holy Names scored within three minutes of one another in the first half, then battled through more than 80 minutes of scoreless action before ending in a 1-1 tie in Tuesday morning's Bay Area showdown at Paul Goode Field.

The Urban Knights struck first in the 37th minute on junior midfielder Reyna Valencia's second goal of the season. The goal was set up by an immaculate ball by freshman defender Katie Williams. On a free kick from nearly mid-field, Williams played in the lob beautifully, just outside the goal box. Valencia battled defenders and put a head on it, driving the ball to the bottom left corner of the net to give the Urban Knights a 1-0 advantage and Williams' the first assist of her career.

Less than three minutes later, Holy Names retaliated. An initial header on HNU's corner kick was blocked by ART U, but the ball deflected directly to Abbi Alexander who finished with a hard right foot to the left side of the net. Neither team found the net for the remainder of the first half and Academy of Art went into the halftime break tied at one.

The Urban Knights had one more opportunity than the Hawks in the second half with four shots to their three, but still neither team could find the net. The first overtime period was a defensive showcase, as neither team allowed a shot. A final overtime period still could not find a winner resulting in ART U's third tie of the season.

After the tie, ART U moves to 5-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference for a total of five points, which is sixth most in the PacWest. The Urban Knights will host Dominican next as they Battle for the Bridge on Sunday, Oct. 27 at noon.
