SEASIDE, Calif. -- In the second game of the season, Academy of Art played shutdown defense to force a scoreless game against Cal State Monterey Bay into overtime. The game would end just three minutes later when sophomore defender
Oliver Hadeen scored his first career goal to give the Urban Knights their first victory of 2018.
In the first half of the contest, ART U held CSUMB scoreless thanks to effort from sophomore goalkeeper Kris Jensson, who made two saves within the first 10 minutes of the game. Both teams had similar first half offensive showings, with ART U taking four shots (one on goal), and CSUMB taking five (two on goal). The Urban Knights' first real opportunity came in the 31st minute when junior forward Zak Kiser put a shot on goal that was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.Â
CSUMBÂ would take the first shot of the second half in the 51st minute when a corner kick was crossed in and put on goal by Luis Lopez. This was when Jensson would collect his third and final save of the game to help solidify his shutout. Academy of Art would prove their resilience and perseverance the remainder of the half, battling an offensive effort in which they defended eight shots and 16 corner kicks, five of which came in the final five minutes of the half.Â
"We knew it would be a difficult half playing against the wind and a side like CSUMB who possess the ball well to create chances," said head coach
Alex Yi. "They're so dangerous on set pieces but we were able to hang on because of some outstanding defensive plays by
Logi Saemundsson,Â
Gilli Kristjansson,Â
Edvard Edvarsson, and
Timmy Langford."
This impenetrable defense displayed in the second half would provide their offense the surge of energy they needed for overtime play, which would not last long. In the 94th minute Hadeen would find the back of the net and end the game.Â
"At the end of regulation we absolutely wanted to win the toss and have the wind," said Yi. "
Andrew Deans made an incredible play the ball fell to Oliver and he kept his nerve. Incredible effort by all the boys today."Â
This goal was significant not only because it was the first of the 2018 season and propelled ART U to their first victory of the year, but it was also the first of Hadeen's career. With this dramatic overtime finish, the Urban Knights are now 1-1. ART U will head to Hayward to take on bay area rival Cal State East Bay Sept. 6. Thursday's non-conference match will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
