Knights Fall to Pioneers on Late Goal

HAYWARD Calif. -- Coming off their first win of the season, Academy of Art crossed the bay and took the field under the lights to face non-conference rival Cal State East Bay. Despite holding CSUEB scoreless for 78 minutes, a late goal would make the difference in this 1-0 loss.

The first half of this bay area showdown was a defensive showcase. ART U completely shut down the Pioneer's offense. They did not allow a single shot the entire period. The only opportunity CSUEB did have was 23 minutes in on a breakaway. The Pioneer player had just broken past the last Urban Knight, but his last touch strayed a little too far allowing sophomore goalkeeper Kris Jensson to intercept the ball before CSUEB could get a shot off. The Urban Knights fared slightly better with one shot late in the period when sophomore defender Oliver Hadeen headed a ball just over the top crossbar.

Determined to break the scoreless match, the second half got off to a much more offensive start, with Academy of Art tripling their total shots in the first 10 minutes of the period. In the 53rd minute freshman midfielder Edvard Edvarsson put a shot on goal that was barely blocked by a diving goalie who knocked the ball out of bounds for an ART U corner. Less than 10 minutes later Edvarsson received an exceptional lob in the middle of the box but he hit it just wide to the right of the net.

The scoreless tie would be broken up in the 78th minute after Jensson made a save that was deflected to a Pioneer player who finally put a ball past the sophomore goalkeeper. The goal would put an end to Jensson's incredible streak of 238 minutes without allowing a goal. Other notable Knights include Fannar Omarsson who collected two shots, both on goal.

After the tough loss, Academy of Art sits at 1-2. ART U will be back in action Sunday Sept. 9, at Humboldt State.
