Knights Tie Single Season Wins Record on Wilson's Fifth Goal

SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art women's soccer made history in Thursday's non-conference match against Notre Dame de Namur by tying the single season program wins record (7) on junior forward Anissa Wilson's fifth goal of the year.

"Beating the program win record was our main goal for this season," said head coach Chris King. "Tying it as we get to the final third is something we are all proud of, but we're at a point where we want to break it and keep winning."

ART U went on the attack quickly and accurately, landing six of their eight shots on goal in the first 11 minutes. With that kind of volume it was only a matter of time before the Urban Knights found the net, and in the 26th minute Wilson did. Sophomore midfielder Sydney Cooke played a ball through the middle that Wilson ran onto and one timed to the back of the net to give Academy of Art a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.

"We created a lot of opportunities today with some spectacular midfield play," said King. "Anissa has that bite to put a game away which is something you always look for as a coach."

The second half was a hard fought battle by Academy of Art's defense. The back line and senior goalkeeper Morgan Wirz defended against a subst18934antial 14 shots successfully and maintained the shutout to earn a 1-0 victory.

The scoreless match comes by way of a season high nine saves game by Wirz and notches her third shutout of 2018 and seventh of her career, just one short of the all-time record. A trio of Urban Knights boasted three or more shots: freshman midfielder Brooklyn Morera (5), freshman defender Avica Robings (3), and Cooke whose three shots were all on goal. Wilson's fifth goal increases her season total in points to 12, five more than any other ART U player.

After the historic win, Academy of Art improves to 7-5-0 overall. The Urban Knights will have an opportunity to break the single season wins record Tuesday, Oct. 16 versus Holy Names.
