HAYWARD, Calif. -- Academy of Art forced overtime with a late goal on a penalty kick by senior midfielder
Rocky Herrera, but a quick goal by Holy Names in the extra minutes cut the Urban Knight's come-back short in Tuesday night's bay area showdown.
The Hawks were on the board early, scoring their first goal in the 13th minute on a corner kick headed in by Jocelyn Reyes. ART U did their best to reciprocate in the first half, but their five shots could not break through HNU's defenses.
Academy of Art played solid defense to keep the Hawks from scoring the remainder of regulation and it looked as if HNU would match the defensive effort until in the 89th minute a Hawk's defender committed a foul inside the box. A Knight went down and a penalty kick was awarded. Herrera was elected to take the shot. She placed the ball, picked a corner, and booted the ball to the top of the net, tying the game 1-1 and forcing overtime.
Only two minutes of overtime was needed to decide the match as Holy Names quickly netted their second goal and took the match 2-1.
Herrera's goal brings her point total to seven, tied for second highest among all Knights. Senior goalkeeper
Morgan Wirz collected eight saves to maintain her number two positioning in PacWest total saves.
After the loss ART U drops to 7-6-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference. The Knights will look to bounce back Saturday Oct. 20th at Azusa Pacific. Â
