ART U Falls to Point Loma on Senior Day

15754SAN FRANCISCO – Despite dropping the twin bill to Point Loma on the season's final day, the losses could not take away from the celebration of the Urban Knights' six seniors playing in their final games at Academy of Art.

GAME ONE: ART U 2, PLNU 9

Before the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, seniors Brett Bovee, Jacob Green, Cameron Jones, Alexander Kuisel, Josh Lopez, and Erick Luna walked towards the first base line where they were each met with hugs and handshakes from their teammates. After the photos were taken and the hugs were all received, ART U returned to their dugout, prepared to take on the Sea Lions in their final two games of the year.

Point Loma hit early and often to begin game one, taking a 6-0 lead before the Knights got on the board in the bottom of the third: with runners on first and third, junior designated hitter Kyle McGraw hit a fly ball to right field which was deep enough for sophomore infielder Robert "Gio" Villanueva to tag up on from third.

Junior right-hander Chris Petrosie finished his outing in the previous frame, making way for Green who took the team through the final 6.1 innings. The Simi Valley, Calif. native allowed three earned runs in the fourth inning, but was nearly spotless in his remaining five innings of work, allowing just four hits during that time. Green struck out two batters in his final collegiate appearance and walked just one in his career-high amount of innings-pitched.

ART U added another run in the eighth inning after Jones reached base to lead off the frame by way of a hit-by-pitch. Two batters later, junior outfielder Michael Maleski hit a double down the left field line on the first pitch, allowing Jones to reach home from first. The Urban Knights mustered seven hits in the contest and a pair of players collected two knocks each: junior outfielder Izac Bauer went 2-for-4, and Villanueva put together a 2-for-3 game with a run scored.

GAME TWO: ART U 1, PLNU 7

In game two, Academy of Art threatened to go ahead early with a rally in the bottom of the first: after McGraw lined out to center to lead off the inning, Maleski and Luna followed with back-to-back-singles. The Knights had runners on first and second with one out, but their attempt to score came up empty as the following batters lined out and struck out.

After being shut down in the first, the Sea Lions plated runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead just over halfway through the contest.

Point Loma eventually took a 7-0 lead after scoring in the sixth and seventh frames, but ART U refused to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the seventh, the Urban Knights loaded the bases, and with two outs, Jones stepped up to the plate for the final time. The Santa Maria, Calif. native delivered a sharp ground ball up the middle which ricocheted off of the pitcher's leg, scoring Bauer from third, and allowing Jones to reach with an RBI single. The RBI made it a 7-1 ballgame, but ART U was unable to pull any closer as they dropped the season finale by the score of 7-1.

Junior lefty Alex Fernandez tossed 6.0 innings in his final start, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Kuisel pitched the final inning, but surrendered a pair of runs on four hits in his final outing. Academy of Art closed out their most successful season in program history with a 20-30 overall record and a 16-20 line in the PacWest.
