Fourth Quarter Surge Earns ART U A 79-68 Win Over Warriors

SAN FRANCISCO – Locked in a close battle with Stanislaus State in non-conference action, Academy of Art University women's basketball unleashed a 21-4 fourth-quarter run to come from behind and earn a 79-68 victory inside Kezar Pavilion on Friday evening. Guiding a charge that featured a season-high 23 assists from the team, senior forward Helena Orts delivered 29 points (her highest point total of the year) and redshirt senior guard Jazzlynn Brewster broke the program's single-game record with 14 assists.

"Basically, we did not want to make the same mistakes we did in previous games," said Orts. "For this reason, we knew that defense and rebounding were the key points. We got some important stops in the fourth quarter and, thanks to those, our offense flowed better."

Four points was the largest margin for either side in the first three quarters. The Warriors led for a good portion of the first quarter, going ahead 14-10 at one point, but ART U rallied behind a variety of offensive options as Orts, sophomore forward Ines Medina, and senior guard Hayley Pryor all contributed to a 6-2 run to take back the lead by the end of the first. Similarly to the first quarter, a Stanislaus advantage was shifted by a late Pryor 3-pointer plus a layup from freshman forward Megan Jefferson to give the Urban Knights what ended up being a 34-32 margin at the half.

16644The lead changed hands six times in the third quarter alone as the matchup resembled a boxing match. Layups were scored by both sides, but a 6-0 run finished the frame with Stanislaus State ahead 57-54. The Warriors grew that lead to six on multiple occasions early in the fourth, however, the momentum shift began with just under seven minutes left. Brewster found Orts for a layup to start the 21-4 run that took the Knights from down six to up 11 by the game's end. Perhaps the biggest shot of the surge came when Medina knocked down a triple to push the lead from four to seven with one minute and seven seconds left. Free throws ended up securing the 79-68 win, ART U's largest margin of the contest.

Academy of Art rises to 2-10 overall this season with the victory. The game-high 29 points (9-of-10 from the free throw line) for Orts were also her season-high and her second-highest total since becoming an Urban Knight. Along with six steals, she added a game-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Brewster put up the first double-double of her ART U career with 11 points as well as 14 assists to surpass Sondra Stilwell's 2009 single-game record.

"Jazz is a very talented player," said Orts. "Thanks to her aggression going to the rim, the defense started closing her up, so she read the game perfectly and found people open. I love playing with Jazz because she is always going to find you if you move with her. You always have to be ready because she can pass it at any time and most of the time you are going to find yourself wide open. I am very happy she broke the school assists record because she deserves it."

Medina posted new career-highs of 19 points (including 3-for-6 from long range) and five steals while redshirt senior forward Pre'Franz Dominick contributed 11 points as well eight rebounds in limited action. Pryor stuffed the stat-sheet with seven points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Stanislaus State falls to 5-7 on the year following Friday's loss. Brittney Livingston converted eight shots in 11 attempts from the field and finished with a team-high 22 points.

With its non-conference portion of the season now complete, ART U resumes PacWest play on Monday, Dec. 18 when the Urban Knights host Point Loma back inside Kezar Pavilion at 5:30 p.m.
