Knights Enjoy 2015-16 At 3rd Annual ARTYs

SAN FRANCISCO -- In the third installment of what has become a yearly tradition, Academy of Art University artist-athletes, coaches, and staff recently came together to celebrate accomplishments from the 2015-16 season at the ARTY Awards. The end-of-the-year banquet recognized Urban Knights from all 16 teams and featured honors for community service, academic, and athletic excellence.

13492"I think this is event is extremely important because all these student-athletes put in such hard work during the year," said Director of Marketing Cameron De Lay. "It's great to come together for an awards ceremony to recognize all their accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom."

For the first time in the event's history, members from the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee played a major role in the ceremony hosting and presenting awards throughout the night.

"We wanted our SAAC members to be rewarded for their extra time and commitment," said SAAC president and women's basketball senior Alex Washington. "The main focus [with having SAAC host the event] was to be celebrating those who have given extra effort to help SAAC and our school contribute to the PacWest Conference."

13490The event opened with the winners of the Community Service Award. With 100 percent participation by the team's staff and student-athletes, women's soccer earned the honor after completing a total of 309 hours, averaging 14 hours of community service per student-athlete, and contributing to the program's NCAA TeamWorks Community Service Competition. In the classroom, men's soccer senior Lennart Fleschhut received the ARTY for Highest Individual GPA, posting a 3.97 over his last two semesters in the School of Advertising. On the team side, a collective 3.29 GPA over the last two semesters led women's golf to the ARTY award.

"The team was excited to be honored for the Best Team GPA," said women's golf head coach Elaine Harris. "After being led by Maria Fernanda Traboulsi and Han-Chuan "Vicky" Kuo in the fall, the team as a whole remains enthusiastic about what they are learning and I am proud of them for working hard in the classroom."

13484Men's track & field and women's basketball collected numerous honors beginning with Mobolade Ajomale's ARTY for Record-Breaking Performance after he delivered five new school records across the indoor and outdoor seasons. The quartet of Jasmin Guinn, Zoie Sheng, Regina Camera, and Sha'Nice Storey all joining the 1,000-point club this past season garnered the Best Moment award then both Ajomale and Guinn would later return to the stage to win Male and Female Most Valuable Athletes overall.

After being named PacWest Newcomer of the Year and becoming just the program's third individual to reach NCAA Nationals, Pierre Fontanarosa of men's cross country was selected as ARTYs Newcomer of the Year.

For the second time in the past three years, Guinn was named ARTYs Urban Knight of the Year following her success in the classroom (3.27 GPA in Animation & Visual Effects), giving back (18 hours of community service), and on the basketball court as a member of the All-West Region First Team, All-PacWest First Team, and PacWest Defender of the Year. A national semi-finalist for the Coach Wooden Cup, she ranked fourth in the country in steals per game in addition to leading ART U in scoring and rebounding.

13491"Jasmin is the epitome of an outstanding student-athlete and we are so proud that she represented our program the last four years at such a high standard," said head coach LaNay Larson. "She has spent so many extra hours to be successful on and off the court. She is a not only a great player, but also a great person who has a lot of amazing things ahead of her in the future."

Ajomale also took home the ARTY for Freshman of the Year and Kevin LaSure was voted Coach of the Year after both individuals made helped ARTYs Team of the Year men's track & field to its highest finish, third, at the NCAA Indoor Nationals with two national champions (Ajomale in 60m, Jordan Edwards in 400m) and six All-Americans.

"It's truly an honor and humbling to be recognized as the 'Coach of the Year,' but it is definitely a reflection of the accomplishments of a hard-working group of athletes and coaching staff," said LaSure. "Anytime a coach wins an award it is definitely the result of the work and effort their team and coaching staff have put in all year."

Introduced last year, two more awards were announced that focused on servant leadership, embracing one's responsibility to serve as a positive role model for others in all aspects of life. The gender-specific honors were named after two individuals dedicated to this concept, inaugural Director of Athletics Dr. Jamie Williams and former Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator Meghan Bushnell. For their work in the community, dedication to their craft in the classroom, and inspirational efforts on the field, baseball's Joseph Marchini was bestowed the Dr. Jamie Williams Male Servant Leadership Award and softball's Brenna Mitchell received for the Meghan Bushnell Female Servant Leadership Award.
