ART U Falls to Pioneers in Season Opener

OAKLAND, Calif. – Despite an excellent effort, the Urban Knights were unable to put a run across in a 7-0 loss to Cal State East Bay.

Junior Brett Bovee started the game for the Urban Knights and was stellar through five innings, only allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. The Las Vegas native also accumulated four strikeouts in his first three innings of work. Bovee only began to run into trouble in the fifth, giving up four runs on four hits. In total, Bovee allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

ART U threatened in the eighth inning after junior left fielder Cameron Jones Jr. was hit in the head on the first pitch and senior second basemen Cody Edmunds followed up with an eight-pitch walk of his own. After an infield fly and a fly out to right field, senior center fielder Joseph Marchini singled to left to load the bases. However, with two outs, senior shortstop Tyler Strawn grounded out to end the inning.

The Pioneers' starting pitcher Alex Vesia threw a gem in his 2016 debut, only allowing two hits in six innings of work with eight strikeouts and no walks.

The Urban Knights will have a chance for redemption on Saturday as they head to the Cal State East Bay to close out the series with an 11 a.m./2 p.m. double header.
