KNIGHT WATCHSixth in the PacWest in total goals (5), Academy of Art has seen three of those scored by senior midfielder
Kristof Urbanyi (third in conference) including the
game-winner versus SF State. He adds one assist for seven points (third in PacWest) and continues to close in on program history. Urbanyi is two game-winning goals, four goals, and 16 points from tying legendary forward and each category leader Grimur Grimsson for the ART U record. Sophomore forward
Alex Walsh and freshman midfielder
Nick Santhiago have each scored once as well and senior defender
Runar Gudbjartsson has one assist.
Led by nearly 389 minutes of hard work by freshman goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez, Academy of Art leads the PacWest and ranks top 20 in save percentage (.840), goals against average (0.92), and shutouts (2). The Knights are also second in the PacWest in saves per game (5.25). Not only does Mendez rank highly in those categories within the conference, but he is now 22nd in the all of NCAA Division II in save percentage and 34th in saves per game after facing a total of 75 shots.
SWIMMING WITH THE SHARKSRemaining in Hawaii through the entire month of September, Hawaii Pacific opened the year with a pair of 2-1 losses to Northwest Nazarene and Cal State Monterey Bay, before defeating BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade all part of non-conference play. The Sharks, who rank second in the conference with 10 total goals, are led offensively by three goals from Divin Fula Lazolo (fourth in the PacWest behind Urbanyi) and have seen two goalkeepers, Jesse Kunitomo and Eduardo Palacios, split time between the pipes with four saves and six goals combined in four starts. Historically, HPU is up 9-1 all-time against Academy of Art.
JOURNEY TO THE OTHER SIDESimilarly to HPU, BYU-Hawaii carries a 2-2 record through its first four matches, falling to NNU and HPU while convincingly topping Chaminade and UH Hilo. Third in the PacWest in goals scored (8), the Seasiders are paced by Jacob McRae's trio and are supported by an even timeshare in goal between Jaden Epplette and Mark Stanley. That duo has each logged a pair of complete games and combine for 13 saves with six goals allowed. The historical BYUH-ART U matchup has seen it all over the years as the Seasiders lead 5-2-1.
SWORDSMENChaminade is yet to register a victory in 2015 after three losses to its three fellow PacWest Hawaii schools. Goal differentials of three or more have made up each of the Silverswords' defeats at the hands of BYU-Hawaii, UH Hilo, and HPU. The two goals Chaminade has scored this season have come from Nicolas Ferro and Ryan Arkelian while time has once again been split in goal with Rene Mejia and Bernd Buescherhoff combining for 14 saves and 13 goals allowed. The Silverswords who are down 7-2 to ART U in the all-time matchup, are set to play host to Fresno Pacific on Sept. 26 before seeing the Knights five days later.
PAYING THE VULCANS A VISITFour matches into the 2015 season, UH Hilo is 1-3 with its only non-shutout coming in a 3-0 win over Chaminade. The Vulcans have otherwise fallen to NNU, Cal State Monterey Bay, and BYU-Hawaii with Notre Dame de Namur (Sept. 26) and Fresno Pacific (Sept. 28) on tap prior to seeing ART U. Oswel Mariles and Trenton Hooper have each scored for UH Hilo while Tyler Hoffman has played all but 23 minutes in goal and has 13 saves with five goals allowed. Despite the Vulcans holding a 6-2 lead in the all-time matchup, the
Knights defeated UH Hilo 3-0 last year thanks to a pair of goals scored by
Jon "Jay" Eldon.
DRAMA AT KEZAR LIFTS ART U PAST SF STATEThey did it again. Three years after the first time it was done, the Academy of Art University men's soccer team again turned suspense into glory on
Sept. 12 inside historic Kezar Stadium, defeating crosstown rival San Francisco State in front of a big crowd with a goal in overtime for a sudden 1-0 victory.
LOOKING AHEADAfter returning from Hawaii, the Urban Knights open up a five-match homestand with Holy Names at Skyline College on Oct. 11.
