ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Senior catcher
James Singzon found his bat again in Wednesday's nightcap with his third multi-hit game of the year, but Sonoma State took advantage of opportunities provided to it by the Academy of Art University baseball team, sweeping a doubleheader 9-2 and 2-1 at Seawolf Diamond.
Â
Self-inflicted mistakes were the Urban Knights' (3-13) struggle Wednesday. Sonoma State (7-9) won game one 9-2 after scoring four of its first five runs with runners who reached via a free pass (walk or hit-by-pitch). Game two was knotted at 1-1 into extra innings before SSU's Matthew Richards reached on a fielding error and later scored the winning run on a passed ball.
Â
Singzon went 3-for-4 in game two and scored the Urban Knights' lone run to raise his season average to .342, but it was Singzon's passed ball that allowed Sonoma State to take a 2-1 victory and complete the sweep. The Seawolves got nine runs on nine hits in the opener to win 9-2.
Â
GAME ONEÂ
Three leadoff walks in the first inning helped Sonoma State take an early 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Eric Ehlow struck an RBI fielder's choice grounder and Alex Crosby drove a sacrifice fly to right for the 2-0 advantage.
Â
Crosby drove home Jourdan Weiks in the third inning with an RBI double after Weiks had been hit by a pitch from ART U starter
Maclane Brady (1-3), making it 3-0. SSU added four runs to its lead in the fourth inning with four base hits and a walk. That would chase Brady, who would go 3 1/3 and surrender seven runs on five walks and four hits.
Â
Down but not out, Academy of Art cut the deficit to five with two runs in the top of the eighth. The Urban Knights also took advantage of opportunities, scoring their first run off of a leadoff walk, with senior right fielder
Jordan Thomas scoring on an RBI groundout by junior centerfielder
Joseph Marchini. A fielding error brought in freshman designated hitter
Jacoby Barragan, making it 7-2.
Â
Sonoma State would get those runs right back, however, thanks to an RBI triple by Richards and a two-out RBI single from Rupert Watson. A pitcher-by-committee decision went to Cody Bennett, who threw the first two innings, shutting out and no-hitting ART U with three strikeouts.
Â
GAME TWOÂ
The Academy of Art offense awoke in the nightcap to the tune of nine hits from seven different players. Singzon led the way with a game-high three base hits, as ART U outhit Sonoma State 9-3.
Â
But the Urban Knights also left seven runners on base, including four in scoring position. ART U also had four runners thrown out at second or third base.
Â
Senior starting pitcher
Nate Gercken (2-3) went 7 1/3 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out three. The outing lowered his season ERA to under 2.00 at 1.85.
Â
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Urban Knights responded in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. Junior third baseman
Brett Adami drove a two-out, two-strike double down the left field line to bring home Singzon and knot it up at 1-1.
Â
The score would stay that way for eight straight scoreless half-innings as Gercken went to battle with another Sonoma State pitching committee. The Seawolves finally broke through in extra innings with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth. Richards reached safely on a one-out fielding error by junior second baseman
Cody Edmunds, stole second and third base, then came home on Singzon's passed ball.
Â
Academy of Art rests for the next seven days before beginning a four-game Pacific West Conference series at home against California Baptist beginning March 12.
