SAN FRANCISCO — A series already once washed out by rain comes to life this week when the Academy of Art University baseball team travels to the North Bay to face California Collegiate Athletic Association member Sonoma State in a mid-week non-conference doubleheader.Â
The three-game series between the Urban Knights (3-11, 1-3 Pacific West Conference) and the Seawolves (5-9, 2-6 CCAA) was originally scheduled for Feb. 6-7, but heavy rains prevented the series from ever starting. Academy of Art was already scheduled to play another non-conference series at home this weekend versus American Sports University, but the series was cancelled.
Â
The Urban Knights began PacWest play last week at home against No. 22-ranked Azusa Pacific, winning the first game of the series with an explosive offense and holding a lead in game two before the defense allowed four unearned runs. APU swept a doubleheader in game three to take the series 3-1.
Â
ABOUT SONOMA STATEThe Seawolves (5-9, 2-6 CCAA) split a four-game series with CCAA rival No. 16 Chico State last week, sweeping a doubleheader on Friday and losing the opening and closing games of the series, including a neutral-site game at Raley Field in Sacramento, Calif. Friday's doubleheader victory snapped a six-game losing streak for SSU.
Â
Cody Morris (.371 batting average) is the Seawolves' top hitter and seventh in the CCAA. The Seawolves only have two home runs this season and are batting .260 as a team. Starting pitching has been solid for SSU with two starters carrying ERAs under 3.00.

BATS AWAKENFriday night started with fireworks when ART U exploded for 14 runs in a game one victory before No. 22 Azusa Pacific. The 14 runs in game one were the most the Urban Knights (3-9, 1-1 PacWest) had scored since March 12, 2011. Four different players drove in at least two runs and eight Knights had at least one base hit.

ANOTHER RECORD FOR GERCKENSenior starting pitcher
Nate Gercken set a new ART U career record in innings pitched with seven innings in Friday's nightcap versus APU, but he was denied a victory after giving up two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and no walks. His 244 1/3 innings are now tops all-time at Academy of Art and surpassed Zach Mexicano's former career record of 240 1/3 set between 2009-12.
