However, their opponents, Fresno Pacific and Dixie State, are both ranked among the top eight in the NSCAA Division II West Region rankings as of Oct. 13.
KICKOFFThe Urban Knights begin the week with a Wednesday, Oct. 14 matchup hosting Fresno Pacific out at Fairmont Field in Pacifica. KNIGHT WATCHART U has moved into a tie with Holy Names for the most saves in the PacWest (51). With two of the five game-winners, senior midfielder
Kristof Urbanyi needs just one more to tie legendary forward Grimur Grimsson for the program record. After logging his fourth goal in Hawaii, he needs three more goals and four more points to tie his former teammate for the Urban Knights record as well. Among the 11 players to register points for Academy of Art, sophomore forward
Alex Walsh has three goals for six points and sophomore midfielder
Alexander Tombach adds a team-best two assists.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kevin Mendez has played all 963:10 minutes in goal for Academy of Art and, after a career-high nine stops against Holy Names, ranks second in the conference in total saves (54), saves per game (5.09), and third in shutouts (2). He ranks 34th in the country in total saves as well.
FIERY FRESNOThe only PacWest Conference receiving votes in the NSCAA National Top 25 Rankings, Fresno Pacific is considered the top team in the West Region and carries overwhelmingly the highest-scoring offense. Averaging over 7.5 points per match, FPU has scored three or more goals in six of its seven victories including a 7-2 domination of Dominican on Oct. 7. The Sunbirds had fallen to only Sonoma State coming into last week when Point Loma trumped them 2-1 in overtime. Jorge Chedraui is the top goal scorer in the PacWest with nine thus far while Renato Bustamante joins his teammate in the conference's top three in terms of points with the most assists (7). Fresno Pacific also brings goalkeeper Andrew Luis who ranks among the top six in the PacWest in goals against average (1.157 – 4th) and total saves (33 – 6th). ART U and FPU have met just three times previously with the Sunbirds holding a 3-0 advantage.
STORMING THE CASTLEWith just one loss on the season and none in PacWest play, Dixie State is the top team in the conference and has earned its eighth-place ranking among all teams in the West Region. The Red Storm's only blemish was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cal State San Marcos on Sept. 6, but since then DSU tied Azusa Pacific 1-1, won four consecutive matches all by 1-0 scores, then topped UH Hilo 2-0 at home in Utah. Santiago Alejandro leads the team with 11 points (four goals, three assists) thus far while goalkeeper Bradley Trella is No. 1 in the PacWest in save percentage (.913), goals against average (.434), and shutouts (6). Dixie State is slated to play Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 15 prior to continuing its storied battle with ART U on Saturday. In eight historical meetings, the Knights have won four times, lost three times, and tied once.
KNIGHTS, HAWKS EMERGE FROM FOG WITH A TIEAcademy of Art University men's soccer battled both a rugged Holy Names team and intense fog out at Skyline College on
Oct. 11 en route to a tie. Conditions became wetter and vision across the field challenged as the Bay Area Pacific West Conference opponents each had quality chances on goal through 110 scoreless minutes.
LOOKING AHEADAfter this week, two more matches will complete ART U's current six-part homestand. Point Loma will be up first at Fairmont Field on Oct. 22 followed by Azusa Pacific on Oct. 24 at CCSF once again.
