Humboldt State Tops Women's Soccer

Box Score

Turlock, CA — Despite the hot temperatures Thursday, the Academy of Art University women's soccer team actually came out stronger in the second half against Humboldt State, limiting the Lumberjacks to one goal and matching them in shots 8-8.

But Humboldt State (2-1) did its damage in the first half, scoring three goals on nine shots to come away with a 4-0 victory over the Urban Knights (0-3) in the first game of the Warrior Challenge at Cal State Stanislaus.

Senior goalkeeper Rachael Rempe made a season-high nine saves and junior forward Réa Laudat led ART U in shots with three, including two on goal. Brooke Stewart and Natalie Gabriel each had two shots with one on goal, including Gabriel's run into the box for a straight-on shot with 13 1/2 minutes to play in the second half that was saved by Megan Wade.

Humboldt State started the scoring nine minutes into the match when Maddi Null scored from 15 yards out inside the box after receiving a pass from Colette Behen, making it 1-0. Those two would switch roles and pair up again nine minutes later for another score. Behen scored from point-blank range on the right side of the goal for a 2-0 lead after Null sent a cross across the box.

The Lumberjacks got one more goal before halftime on a header from Taylor McMillin off a corner kick to take a 3-0 lead with just over 12 minutes to play.

Academy of Art brought more defensive pressure in the second half and turned away Humboldt State for more than 30 minutes before HSU got its last score of the game. Marquel Love played a long free kick from Wade right up the middle and beat Rempe to the top left corner for a 4-0 advantage.

The Urban Knights will continue play in the Warrior Challenge at Cal State Stanislaus at 7 p.m. Saturday when they face the host No. 8 Warriors.
