Men's Soccer Honors Six Seniors in Finale

Box Score

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Six seniors were honored Saturday at Skyline College for their service as members of the Academy of Art University men's soccer team. Mike Anderson, Brady Fiero, Carlos Hernandez, Joshua Leader, Frederik Nagel and Thobbi Sveinsson all played in their final match as Urban Knights as ART U fell 2-1 to Notre Dame de Namur in its season finale.

Nagel scored his final career goal in his final career game with the Knights (7-11, 5-7 Pacific West Conference), netting one on an assist from fellow senior Sveinsson and freshman Alex Walsh in the 24th minute. Walsh sent a ball to Sveinsson who one-timed it to Nagel attacking in the box. Nagel tapped it in from 15 yards out to cut the Argos' (9-7-2, 7-4-1 PacWest) lead in half at 2-1.

NDNU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, 21 seconds Saturday. Its first goal came just 131 seconds into the game when Esteban Berumen tallied his sixth goal of the year. The Urban Knights were trying to clear a ball out of the box, having taken it from Berumen after he dribbled in on the attack. But Berumen stole the ball right back, then dribbled around the Knights' defense and goalkeeper Alejandro Escobedo to the right and shot onto an open net for a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

Tyler Matas finished another goal for the Argonauts inside the goalkeeper box 8:10 later. Teammate Andy Sandoval's shot from the left was saved by Escobedo but it was rebounded across the box. That's where Matas collected it on the right and finished low inside the right post for a 2-0 advantage.

Notre Dame de Namur outshot the Urban Knights 11-2 in the first half, but ART U turned on the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Argonauts 11-9. The Knights put four shots on goal in the second stanza but couldn't break through with the equalizer.

Escobedo finished the game with six saves to end his 2014 rookie campaign with 55 total stops – the third-best single-season mark all-time at Academy of Art. His 1.97 goals against average for the season ranks fifth all-time and he finished tied for second for wins (6) and shutouts (3) in a single season.
