Box Score FRESNO, Calif. — Junior midfielder
Kristof Urbanyi's penalty kick goal in the waning minutes of Thursday evening's match at Fresno Pacific left the Academy of Art University men's soccer team just short of making a last-second comeback, as the Sunbirds escaped with a 2-1 Pacific West Conference victory at Ramirez Field.
Â
Thanks to a foul in the box by Fresno Pacific's Martin Kams, which drew him a yellow card at the 87 minutes, 56 seconds mark, the Urban Knights (4-6, 2-2 PacWest) were awarded a penalty kick. Urbanyi made good on the opportunity for his second goal of the season, making the score 2-1 with two minutes to play.
Â
Academy of Art would not get another shot off however, as the Sunbirds (7-2, 5-1 PacWest) controlled possession for the final 120 seconds of the game to hold on for the win. FPU's win snapped ART U's streak of back-to-back shutout victories while putting the Sunbirds at the top of the PacWest standings with 15 points.
Â
Thiago Novis ended the Urban Knights' defensive scoreless streak at  201:18 when he scored 5:59 into the game on assists from Alvaro Nogales and Jorge Chedraui, giving the Sunbirds an early 1-0 lead.
Â
FPU would also score the eventual game-winning goal in the first half to lead 2-0 at the break. Dallas Whitlow corralled a corner kick from Eric Velarde in the 41st minute, turned and fired for his first goal of the year.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Joshua Leader made his second consecutive start in goal for the Urban Knights, making three saves. Andrew Luis made five stops while minding the net for Fresno Pacific to earn the win.
Â
Academy of Art travels to Southern California next week for two PacWest matches. Thursday the Urban Knights face Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif., then Saturday they face Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego.Â
