Riverside, CA — Senior midfielder Thobbi Sveinsson scored his second goal of the year and freshman midfielder Dominic Payerchin netted his first career score with just 55 seconds left, but the Academy of Art University men's soccer team was edged 3-2 Thursday by Cal Baptist at Lancer Soccer Field.
 
Cal Baptist (4-7-1, 3-3-1 PacWest) rode the foot of Paul Oliver, who scored all three of the Lancers' goals with a hat trick. Two of Oliver's goals came off of penalty kicks – the first one to tie the game, the second as the eventual game-winner.
 
Oliver's first goal was a PK in the 38th minute that he converted by beating ART U (4-7, 2-3 PacWest) goalkeeper Joshua Leader to the right, making it 1-1. The game stayed tied 1-1 through halftime and all the way into the 84th minute when Oliver took Bryan Portillo's pass and shot it inside the far post for a 2-1 lead with seven minutes to play.
 
Oliver added much-needed insurance for the Lancers with 1:18 to play when he drew another penalty kick while battling the Academy of Art defense in the box. He converted by banging the ball off the crossbar and in, giving CBU a 3-1 lead.
 
That goal would prove to be the game-winner when Payerchin put the ball in the net 23 seconds later from a scramble inside the box, making it 3-2. With only 55 seconds left to play though, the Lancers controlled possession and held on for the victory.
 
Sveinsson gave the Urban Knights a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when he headed in a well-placed corner kick from Kristof Urbanyi. Sveinsson leaped above the crowd from the middle of the box and headed it just inside the post for the goal.
 
Academy of Art next travels to San Diego for an 11 a.m. kickoff Saturday at Point Loma Nazarene.
