San Diego, CA -- The Academy of Art University University women's golf team improved overall in the second round of the PLNU Super San Diego Championship, and in the first action of the spring finished among a crowded top third of the 22-team field. The Urban Knights knocked a stroke of their first-round score, and although three of their five golfers improved their scores, head coach Cheryl Lala and her squad left San Diego feeling like they could have done better.
"This tournament wasn't exactly what we wanted as a team," said Lala. "We made some mistakes on the golf course as a whole, but this is an opportunity for us to grow, learn, and get better for the next time around. This team is made of fighters and we will regroup for our next event."
The Urban Knights had two finishers in the top 20, as
Lyra Yoe fell from fourth place overall but still finished tied with her teammate
Crystal Superal for 17th place, shooting identical scores of 161.
Andrea Nieto took seven strokes off her first-round score to finish at 165, while
Deanna Tyndall slipped from her opening round of 83 to 88 in the second.
Melissa Genao had the biggest jump of the day, rebounding from a first round score of 94 to take 13 strokes off her score and end the day with an 81.
Megan Woodland of University of Victoria (BC) won the overall with a final score of 149, while Cal State San Marcos (626) won the event in the team competition. The Urban Knights will be back in action on February 25-26 at the St. Edward's Invitational in Austin, TX.
