KNIGHT WATCH
For an Academy of Art team that currently leads the PacWest Conference in points (46), goals (17), and is second in assists (12), the Urban Knights have been led by
Jonmundur Gretarsson's four goals and three assists (11 points) which are among the Top 4 in each category. He has registered a goal and an assist in each of his past two games with his lone game-winner coming in overtime against California Baptist.
Frederik Nagel has four goals of his own while
Aron Ekberg adds three assists. Gretarsson and Nagel are already halfway to the program's single-season record for goals scored set by Andrew "Boomer" Cruz in 2010. Overall, 12 of 20 ART U players have put points on the board in some form this season. In goal, freshman
Luca Theis has started five of eight matches thus far with 11 saves in just over 442 minutes with a 4-1 record to his name.
CALLING THY NAMES
Holy Names endured a four-match slide to start the year, but recently righted the ship with a 3-2 overtime victory at UC Merced. In the early going, the Hawks were grounded by Cal Poly Pomona 3-1, Simon Fraser 4-3, then starting PacWest play, Azusa Pacific and California Baptist each notched shutouts over HNU, winning 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. Most recently, Holy Names fell to Notre Dame de Namur 4-1 Monday and then Dominican 4-3 on Wednesday. The Hawks' top scorers thus far have been David Norton and Jamie Phillips who each have five goals apiece. Defensively, Phillip Poser has started all seven matches, notching 28 saves while allowing 16 goals in just over 548 minutes. In their first ever meeting last season, Holy Names defeated ART U 2-1 on Sept. 29, 2012.
SUITING UP FOR THE PENGUINS AGAIN
The Urban Knights head to Dominican's Kennelly Field for their second meeting in the past week following a 3-1 ART U victory last Monday. Then on Wednesday, the Penguins locked into a high-scoring battle with Holy Names and exited with a 4-3 win thanks to goals by Swap Mushiana, David Mendez, Kolby Mitnick, and ultimately the game-winner by Vini Enriquez. The team is now led offensively by Mushiana's five goals and Mendez's four goals (one of which was on the kickoff against Academy of Art). Goalie time has been split between Patrick Rabbitt (625 minutes, 33 saves, 13 goals allowed) and Erik Anderson (315 minutes, 28 saves, 9 goals allowed). After the match earlier this week, Dominican holds a 5-4 lead historically against ART U.
ACADEMY OF ART RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS
ART U Men's Soccer executed its fifth victory in its past five games this past week with wins over Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican. The Knights added to their collection of thrilling victories at Koret Field with a 2-1 comeback win over NDNU on Saturday afternoon. Facing a 1-0 deficit at halftime, Academy of Art mobilized behind
Jonmundur Gretarsson and
William "Willy" Velasco Villa for a one-two punch in the second period and ART U's second Pacific West Conference victory this season.
Then on Monday, men's soccer fired the second-most shots in program history and put away Dominican 3-1 in the first of two meetings this season. The Icelandic trio of
Jon "Jay" Eldon Runar Gudbjartsson, and Gretarsson all got into the scoring act out at Crocker Amazon Park.
"I'm really pleased with the progress and the attitude of the guys so far and I'm really looking forward to see what level the guys can get to this year," head coach
Mike Keller said.
LOOKING AHEAD
With their completion of a stretch facing four Bay Area opponents, the Urban Knights will host Point Loma (Oct. 12) and Dixie State (Oct. 14) in a pair of games in San Francisco.
