URBAN KNIGHTS TO COMPLETE FOUR-PART HAWAII CIRCUT
After playing 12 of its first 13 matches at home or in the Bay Area, ART U Men's Soccer now embarks upon its lone major roadtrip of the 2013 season. The Urban Knights head to the island of Oahu where they will begin a four-match stretch playing at all four Pacific West Conference Hawaiian schools.
STARTING KICKOFF
The first opponent for Academy of Art will be Chaminade on Saturday, Oct. 26. That match is scheduled for a 3:30 PM HT (6:30 PM PT) start time following the women's contest. Two days later on Monday, Oct. 28, ART U faces the Seasiders at BYU-Hawaii Soccer Field. Then, the Knights will be in action on Halloween (Thursday, Oct. 31) at Amauulu Field on Hawaii's Big Island to take on UH Hilo. The week-long trip concludes with Hawaii Pacific at Atherton Field in Kaneohe on Saturday, Nov. 2. The final three matches (BYUH, UH Hilo, HPU) are all scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM HT (6:00 PM PT). KNIGHT WATCH
Mixing it up with Fresno Pacific and Hawaii Pacific atop the PacWest leaders in both points (5.46 points per game) and goals scored (2 goals per game), ART U has proven its scoring ability this year.
Jonmundur Gretarsson, who remains the team's scoring leader, offers five goals scored thus far (10th in PacWest) to go with 14 points (10th in PacWest). Gretarsson shares the assists lead with
Aron Ekberg as each offers four apice. Gretarsson, who has five goals in seven shots on frame, now has 14 points to put him three shy of Andrew "Boomer" Cruz's single-season program record (17). Ekberg needs one more assist to tie teammate
Patrick Heinemann for the program's career record (12).
William "Willy" Velasco Villa comes off his first
PacWest Weekly Final 5 honor following a week in which he scored two goals and added an assist. Out of 21 Urban Knights to see action in the field, 16 have had a hand in the team's 26 goals scored.
KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS
Between the pipes,
Luca Theis has 20 saves with seven goals allowed in seven starts. The freshman is just one win from tying Ian Sutherland for the program's single season record of seven goalkeeper victories. Theis has split time with
Joshua Leader who has 17 saves and nine goals allowed in six starts after getting the nod against Holy Names.
SWORDS STRUGGLING
It has been a frustrating season for Chaminade as the Silverswords have yet to record a victory, going 0-13 to start the year. Their non-conference season did not see the Swords leave Hawaii with HPU getting the better of them 4-2 to start the year, then Cal State San Bernardino taking a 4-0 victory, a 2-1 overtime win going to UH Hilo, and BYU-Hawaii prevailing 3-0. Chaminade took to the road in late September, but difficult losses ensued as Dixie State (5-0), Point Loma (4-1), Azusa Pacific (6-1), and California Baptist (4-0) all came out victors over the Silverswords. Coming into Saturday, the Swords' recent action included an 8-1 win for Fresno Pacific, 4-0 to Notre Dame de Namur, and 5-0 to BYUH once again. Of the six goals Chaminade has scored two have come from Dayton Sato while the primary goalkeeper has been Nic Jetter who has allowed 48 goals in 12 starts though his 63 saves lead the PacWest. Over seven historical meetings, Academy of Art has taken five from the Swords with three consecutive victories heading into this matchup.
NOT UNDERESTIMATING THE POWER OF THE SEA-SIDE
Currently tied with Hawaii Pacific for the most conference wins by a Hawaii team in the PacWest, BYU-Hawaii had a tale of two seasons. After starting the year with a scoreless tie hosting Cal State San Bernardino and losing 2-0 to UH Hilo, the Seasiders opened 2013 with a 2-3-2 record. During that stretch, BYUH did defeat HPU 4-2. Beginning with a 2-1 win over Dixie State on Oct. 3, BYU-Hawaii has won five in a row including a 3-0 triumph against Fresno Pacific. The Seasiders have outscored their opponents 14-3 in the streak aided by a 5-0 win against Chaminade on Oct. 23. For a BYUH squad that has not lost at home this season (4-0-1), Mike Moreno's five goals and three assists lead both categories. Chris Pineda has served every minute of all 12 starts in goal with 39 saves and 12 goals allowed. Looking back at the historical matchup, the Seasiders hold a 4-2 advantage over ART U.
VULCAN VARIATION
UH Hilo was hot early this year after going 3-1 to open the season with a 2-0 win over BYU-Hawaii and then back-to-back victories against Chaminade. However, the Vulcans' mainland roadtrip was not so kind as Point Loma shut them out 1-0, California Baptist had a 3-2 edge, and Azusa Pacific dominated 3-0 before a 3-3 tie with Dixie State. It was not until recently that UH Hilo broke its 0-5-1 slide with a 1-0 victory over Dominican followed by a 2-0 shutout of HPU. The Vulcans, who host Holy Names on Oct. 26 prior to ART U, are led by James Yamane's three goals and two assists with Yonha Andrabi exclusively handling Hilo's goalkeeping duties with 39 saves and 16 goals allowed in all 12 starts. Though Academy of Art defeated UH Hilo in the first two meetings ever, the Vulcans have had the Knights' number in the last four meetings.
NAVIGATING DANGEROUS SEAS
Despite sharing the PacWest's fourth spot with BYU-Hawaii at 5-2-1 in conference, Hawaii Pacific has not put together more than a two-game win streak to date in 2013. The Sea Warriors opened with a 4-2 win over Chaminade, but then tied Cal State San Bernardino 0-0 and fell to Simon Fraser (currently #4 nationally) 2-1. HPU put away Western Washington 1-0, but sustained a 4-2 loss to BYU-Hawaii. They roared back with a 5-1 win at Dixie State though California Baptist foiled their plans of a mainland sweep with a 2-1 win. Since that time, Hawaii Pacific has gone 2-1-1 with two of those matches needing double overtime. The Sea Warriors will face Holy Names on Oct. 28 prior to meeting Academy of Art. The PacWest's leading scorer Felipe Silva has 10 goals and five assists in 13 matches and makes a dangerous pair with Brais Garcia who has nine goals to his name with five of those being game-winners. HPU's main goalkeeper is Mael Lefebvre who has 42 saves and 16 goals allowed in all but 25 minutes of 13 starts thus far. ART U has never defeated Hawaii Pacific in six historical meetings.
MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES BACK TO TIE HAWKS 1-1
This past Saturday afternoon at Merritt College Stadium, an early advantage for Holy Names lasted much of the way before ART U Men's Soccer delivered the
equalizer in the 83rd minute and eventually forced a 1-1 tie. A hard-fought match that was the Urban Knights' final non-conference contest saw
Malcolm McLellan and Velasco Villa connect on a game-changing goal.
"We didn't perform well in the first half, but it was good to see us adjust and raise the level in the second half," head coach
Mike Keller said.
LOOKING AHEAD
After Hawaii, Academy of Art will have just one final match on its regular season schedule. The Urban Knights host Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4:00 PM inside Kezar Stadium. Prior to kickoff, ART U will honor its eight seniors (
Jacob Baumann,
Sylvester Gyan,
Leonardo Bartelle,
Patrick Heinemann,
Jonmundur Gretarsson,
Andrew Durano,
Aron Ekberg,
Luis Barrera).
