Box Score
Oakland, CA -- In yet another low-scoring affair and their fourth overtime game of the year, the Academy of Art University women's soccer team spent a lot of time on the offensive side of the pitch, but ended up falling to Holy Names University in the extra period 1-0. The Urban Knights put up a season high in shots on goal, but the Hawks made the one that counted in extra time, handing the Knights a tough loss.
The Knights awakened their offense in terms of getting into a groove, launching eight shots in the first period and forcing six saves by Holy Names keeper Jenni Dooley. The best chance for ART U was another shot inches off the mark, as
Hannah Emmett got a shot off that hit off the crossbar in the 35th minute. That was the closest either team got, as the two teams went into halftime with no score.
The second period was much of the same, as the teams matched up well, with the Knights narrowly out-shooting the Hawks five shots to four. Academy of Art also had a chance with four corner kicks in the second half, and had multiple shots from inside the box, but Dooley was there to turn each of them away. The Knights caught a break of their own when a shot from Paola Ruesga hit off the post and kept it scoreless at the end of regulation.
It was a golden goal for the Hawks less than a minute into the extra time, as Alyssa Flores found Courtney Okazaki for her first goal of the season at the 40-second mark in overtime to score the only goal of the game and give the win to the Hawks. It was a frustrating loss for the Knights, who put up 13 shots, 11 on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Beth Barker,
Réa Laudat, and
Marley Sutter each had a pair of shots on goal, but Dooley's 10 saves kept them off the scoreboard.
Academy of Art heads to Hawaii in a week, playing Chaminade (Oct. 26), BYU-Hawaii (Oct. 28), UH Hilo (Oct. 31), and Hawaii Pacific (Nov. 2).Â
