ART U Falls In 2OT on Late Goal by Dixie St.

Box Score
San Francisco, CA -- Monday marked yet another defensive battle for the Academy of Art University women's soccer team at Crocker-Amazon Park, as both defenses played fantastically through two overtime periods. Unfortunately their matchup with Dixie State University ended in defeat, as a goal with under four minutes remaining ended a 2-1 contest in favor of the Red Storm.

The game started off on an interesting note, as the Urban Knights got on the board first, albeit in an unconventional manner. Beth Barker pushed a cross from the left side at at the nine-minute mark, which actually kicked off the defender and past the goalkeeper to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. As the period came to a close, ART U achieved an interesting feat, holding a lead at halftime without getting off a shot on the goal.

Regardless ART U hung on to that lead for almost 60 minutes, as Dixie State did not equalize until Ashley Wade took a feed from Megan Marchbanks that tied it up at 1-1. Both sides got their money's worth in the second half, as there was a total of 15 shots by both teams to go along with four saves from the two goalkeepers.

As time expired in regulation, the two teams were still knotted up with one goal apiece, and the Knights went to overtime. The first overtime period was all quiet for the Red Storm, as the Knights actually got off two shots and forced a save while getting none against the ART U defense. It looked to be the same in the second extra period, but Kimberly Thurman found Jennifer Mason on a short cross in the box, who fired it up and in to the far post to score the golden goal and hand the Knights a tough loss.

Rachael Rempe tied her season-high with nine saves, while Beth Barker and Louise Fillingham each got a shot on the goal. Mason had five shots on goal for Dixie State, but only the last one found the back of the net. Academy of Art will play on Saturday at Holy Names before flying to Hawaii.
